Garrett v KKK

Featured Replies

Now that I've discovered my turbo is sha**ed, I've realised it's a Garrett as opposed to a KKK. Am I right in believing these are 'supposed' to be better?? Also, can anyone suggest any that can recondition it, I think the bearings/seals have gone as it's started to squeel like a wailing banshee! :( I've emailed Midland Turbo, but just wondering if anyone else has any suggestions?

Cheers

Get your Garrett unit Hybrided!!

Here's some Turbo P0rn for you!!

Cheers for the Turbo p0rn! Unfortunately not in a position to pay out on hybriding it, so am hopefully just getting my recon'd. Really could do without the expense at the minute,

It'll be a "small" Garrett. Though it may have better press than the KKK, it's still not any real improvement. Best bet is either Garrett recon/exchange or get a KKK off ebay or from a breakers. (KKK KP39 or BV39... I think).

HYBRID!!!!!!!

Na up to you...... i would say ebay and get it checked.....

In general it is not Garrett V KKK, it is Garrett > KKK ;)

You probably have the GT1749va turbo which although better than the KKK equivalent, can still blow.

All turbo's can blow, at some point, not always bad use either. manufacturing failure comes into it some times.

but look after any turbo and it should (to the best of your ability) last the life of the car.

Can you tell me then if I can hybrid my Garret at a later stage, or will it be a case of trade in against a new hybrid version.

also what is the difference between the Stages of hybrid. 1,2 & 3

cheers

I only know of 1 and 2. 1 is max 215bhp, 2 is max around 230 to 235. However, all these "stages" claims are fairly irrelevant as power output is not determined by turbo alone - many other factors too!

Yes I know there is loads more to be changed out when going for the other stages, but just had no idea really what they meant when people write about the.

I put stage 3 as i got carried away typing numbers.

but I also am sure I have seen a stage 3 coming soon on one of the guys cars from Jabba.

will ask him if I see it again what it is all about...

cheers,

Well I've sent it off to Midland Turbo for a rebuild, bearings felt like they had gone, therewas oil in the exhaust side of the turbine so the seals are shot, and the compressor looked like it had just clipped the side of teh housing as the edges of 3 blades were slightly burred over! Should cost somewhere between £185-380 + vat to rebuild according to them. Not impressed as it was supposedly replaced under warranty 17000 miles ago according to ALS skoda in Ely!!

Well had Midland Turbo ring up, needs full recon, £380+vat. They engineer reckons it looks like something has gone through the compressor. Couldn't feel any gritty bits in the oil in the bottom of the intercooler, and it wasn't major damage to the compressor, just slight burring of 3 vanes. Can't see how anything could've gone though it! Will now remove inlet manifold and check for debris in there. I thought as the bearings had gone, it had just caused the shaft to pivot a bit and allow the compressor to clip the housing. Oh well, hopefully get the old girl back on the road soon! Really starting to loose interest in this car now.... :'(

Hope it all goes well for you,

£380 + VAT is a little hefty, but hey could have been worse, my car is in at JABBA at present for a new turbo after my orginial KKK decided to blow up on me. there is bits of the turbo all the way through the inlet pipes and intercooler. Fortunately none in the inlet manifold or I would be in trouble...

fingers crossed for you and once back on the car it will be as good as new.

just a suggestion though. Why not clean out the full intake system and intercooler and get the whole thing breathing like new again without any oily rubbish in it.

enjoy...
