1.4 16v Fabia - Misfires when hot

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have an intermittant fault on my 2005 fabia estate 1.4 16v 100bhp. Mileage 38,000

Has been driving normally for past 9 months from purchase of car from an OEM dealer.

recently ECU light came on and then went off with no noticable change in the way the car drove.

After another month of trouble free driving the ECU light came back on flashing after 2 hours of motorway driving, when the light was flashing there was a severe misfire so we had the car towed the remaining 100 miles to destination.

Since then the fault has come and gone although steadily getting more persistant. Sometimes the ECU light is off and everything is fine, sometimes the ECU light in on constantly but everything seems fine, increasingly when stuck in traffic, or idleing for long perids the ECU light will flash and the misfire occurrs. When ever the engine compartment gets hot the problem seems to occur.

Been to two garages and counting! diagnostics show misfire on cylinder 3, have had new coil pack and corresponding wiring loom patch from first garage. Problem re occurred 24 hours and 200 miles later and went to garage number two. Garage number 2 stated that the diagnostic stating cylinder no.3 may actually refer to cylinder no.2, and so to the second new coil pack and a full set of new spark plugs for good measure.

On testing the car the mechanic let the car run hot and the problem reoccured with the ECU light flashing and the engine misfiring. Happily he did not charge me for the coil pack he replaced, but he does not know what to do next.

Has any body had this problem before, is it a generic fault? Any help greatly appreciated.

P.S sorry for the very long post.

A compression test would be next, I'd suspect a valve sealing problem on number 3 cylinder. On the VW engines that I have seen with theses symptoms, it always seems to number 3 cylinder.

Thanks for the reply, would a valve sealing problem cause an intermittant effect, also as he engine temperature is fairly constant, is there anything outside the actual engine that would be effected by heat eg electrical system.

I have been advised by a garage to run the car until the effect is no longer intermittant but constant to aid diagnosis, is this wise?

I realise this is an old post but this rings alarm bells with me. If you are still about Dave, I would really appreciate you getting back to me about if you managed to resolve this problem? I have the same vehicle (a 2006 Fabia Estate 1.4 16V 100) and had almost an identical problem. Only had it a month and the car misfired and went into limp mode. The Skoda garage said it was a cylinder misfire (no.3 I think!) and replaced the coil pack under warranty. Things were fine for a while but now I have occasional engine warning lights and stalling. Some forum members have suggested a wiring loom problem which could also have triggered the cylinder misfire.

Ring any bells?

Cheers,

Mike
