Gearbox Oil Query

Featured Replies

I bought some gearbox oil a while ago as I thought it might need topping up but when I checked it didn't. I've now decided to do a change and bought another litre. Which stuff is right and which is wrong? The VAG group was the first stuff I bought a year or so back, the Synta stuff I bought today.

When i changed the oil for my Superb i used Castrol Taf-x 75w/90 grade which is fully synthetic and was recomended on the Castrol Edge website, I bought it from Opie oils when they had a promotion on. Hope this is of some help. The Quantum oil is semi synthetic, not sure about the VAG oil.

Why not?, Quantum is a VW brand, so I'll expect that the two will be identical in specification.

if you go to a VAG dealer and get them to look up the VIN of your vRS in the parts system ETKA the gear oil that should be used is the G060 stuff

but if you wanna put 75W90 in its your call...

G060 is only around £5 a litre so why even risk it?

G060 is 75W90 isn't it?

I thought all the VAG group used 75w/90 these days.

Could be like engine oil, when i went to skoda they said that they are using the same oil in all the cars apart from longlife

G060 is 75W90 isn't it?

doesn't say that on either of the bottles I have - look up other info on the net on the perils of using 75w90 in a vag transmission - not worth the risk imo

G060 is 75W90 but that doesn't mean that 75W90 is the same as G060. You're comparing a product with the a specification. Not all 5W40 oil is the same but it meets the specification.

Also I dropped by TPS today to pick up some G060 and they had a large display of Quantum oils behind the counter, but not any transmission fluid in Quantum bottles. Unfortunately they couldn't find the G060 they were supposed to have so they ordered some more for Tuesday for me. 2 Litres of G060 costs £11.60 from them by the way.

if you look through some of the mk4 vw forums you will find the G060 is not 75W90 even though vw state it should be - its viscosity is far thinner

if you put aftermarket 75w90 in your box it'll more than likely knacker up your shifting and cause all manner of problems - genuine is the only way to go, especially considering the low cost of genuine fluid

When i changed my gearbox oil a couple of months ago i got mine from my local skoda dealer,it is the latest spec oil(so they said) the part number on the tub is G 060 726 A2.It came in litre containers.

to be honest we'd never sell you the quantum stuff, it may well be the same spec but etka doesnt tell us viscosity of the gearbox oil so i would just supply what genuine part number it says, it wont say on the genuine bottle either to stop you buying it to get the spec then buying cheaper stuff. some of our specialist vag buy the quantum stuff so who knows

end of the day its lub?

Im sure it will do the job. mind a lot wont really care I wouldnt of thought
