Blown Turbo - Octavia VRS 1.8T

Featured Replies

Guys and Girls,

In need of some good advice here. My Octavia Vrs has blown a turbo and i'm a bit stuck for what to do.

I can get an uprated turbo but i would imagine the car will need custom remapping if i do that? Also is there a good source of the original parts, VAG is extortionate! There doesn't seem to be many people that do a standard turbo for it?

Has anyone had this and how did you end up sorting it?

I'm going to that you for your help in advance, you guys have always come up trumps in the past.

Steve

Can't remember the guys name but one of the members in the Octy I forum had his turbo give up a few months ago due to foreign object damage to the vanes. He got a replacement one from Skoda fitted, I think it was about £750. I'll see if I can find the thread.

<Edit> - here's the thread

Hope that helps

Clive (westallc) would be the man to ask about how much it would cost to upgrade the turbo.

you have 2 ways to go

oem = £500 from main dealer exchange for your broken turbo

or uprated in the form of a hybrid = £750 for turbo + you need to do the following

uprated fuel pump

bam injectors

3 inch tip pipe

3inch maf

custom remap

part will set you back around the 1k mark and the mapping around the £500 mark so not a cheap option and thats if you have frontmount and bigger exhaust fitted if not add anothe 1k for them

what you best bet is to buy oem and fit it yourself its really easy to do. or take the car to an independant garage like unit 18 prob be around £100 to fit it

pm me if you need more help

Thanks,

I've got a bit of time as i don't have to use the car for a bit so i'm going to mull it over. I wouldn't mind it iprated but i don't know whether i'd have much chance to use it properly. Might go the OEM and have it chipped.

do you know why the turbo blew? I've heard there is normally an underlying cause and they don't tend to just go for no reason?

Really don't know. I've had the car 2 years and it's been faultless. It's coming up to that age of needing a bit of work. I've bought all the cambelt stuff and i'm waiting to do it.

By the way, it's not the best fix but i've sourced a 2nd hand turbo from VRS Northampton for £200. It's only done 20k, and 1 months warranty so i'm fairly happy with it.

There are loads of places who offer reconditioned or repair to your own turbo. www.midlandturbo.com offer 12 month guarantee. Just google reconditioned turbos, & you'll find many companies.

reconditioned means they just cleaned them :rofl:

just check the movement of the shaft should have no inwards and outwards movement

p.s one of the main reasons for turbo failure is the oil pickup in the sump gets clogged with crap i strongly advise you change this for a new one

£9 for the strainer £12 for sump sealent £20 oil and filter and about 1 hour to do ( THIS IS A MUST )

make sure if you fit it yourself to prime the turbo before starting.

as said above 90% of turbo failure is caused by something else not being correct

if you need more advise drop me a pm ive done a few now lol
