Hybrid Turbo Selection

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I'm in the market for a brand new hybrid turbo and would like some guidance please. I'm interested in the Allard VT2 but having spoken to a very helpful chap today I've been informed it will be well over £1k for the unit, so would like to know what other options there may be (I know they're not cheap, but he said WELL over a grand thats all) . Turbo Dynamics, are they any good? Anyone else? I'm after about 220bhp and will have all the relevant upgrades to suit, retaining the dmf on a sachs clutch kit. The power will mainly be used for overtaking and the odd spritely run, no track work and no traffic light grand prix. I'm looking for reliability.

Anyone who has a hybrid turbo or is simply better informed than me, I'd really appreciate your input. Hoping to order one as soon as possible following a blown turbo on Sunday evening.

Thanks in advance.

Hi im using a Turbo Dynamics Stage 2 PD150 turbo, has been at 200bhp for around 60k miles and 220 for around 2k still going strong

clutch went in a big way however at 220bhp, was a sachs also with dmf, im now installing a smf and helix clutch, 220 is verging on the limit for the dmf

On my last Fabia I ran a Garret GT1749VB (PD150 turbo) at hybrid stage 1, which was upgraded by TD. I was very happy with it and had it mapped nicely at 215bhp and 330lb/ft. That was with a Sachs organic clutch and the stock DMF. I had no issues with slip or DMF vibration. But obviously it needs driving properly. Used badly and it'll end up in smoke without too much difficultly.

Also of critical importance to reliability of the car, turbo and associated parts is the mapping. Get it done by those who have prior experience with diesel hybrid mapping. The issue with not having a non-paddle clutch/SMF setup is the level of torque the DMF can reliably handle. This is reliably thought to have a upper limit of 330ish lb/ft.

HTH,

Steve

Thanks for replying. You'd recommend that turbo then? I'm trying to source a Blueflame exhaust too, what a nightmare that is, they have none in stock and are closing their factory for 3 weeks. As I have a Sachs Clutch, could a SMF be installed later?

These things always happen at the worst possible time and catch you off guard!

I think there have been a few ongoing issues with Blueflame of late. Check Awesome's last Blueflame Group Buy for info!

I ran a std exhaust setup on mine - not decatted or anything, completely std. That's perhaps seen as an interesting decision but it didn't seem to restrict the type and level of mapping that I wanted.

Yes, I would recommend the TD hybrid setup and I also found them a very good company to deal with.

With the SMF, I'd again personally recommend avoiding that route. I didn't want the change in feel that this brings, and the level of vibration it brings with it. In my view it's at an unacceptable level for a daily driven road car. I may be wrong, but I think you'd need a completely new clutch assembly to run an SMF, I don't think it's compatible with the Sachs organic setup.

Steve

I personally am of the other opinion, the smf setup is amazing, gear changes crisp and the bite and pick up when going through the gears is phenomenal....

also clutch isnt too stiff i dont feel, personally i love hard clutches :)

only rattles when clutch is out so is bearable, for the performance plus's it really isnt an issue to me

ive had all 3 set-ups

OEM

sachs + dmf - feels exact same as oem

helix + smf

the helix and smf wins hands down, plus it will last the lifetime of the car.... unlike my sachs and dmf which has recently pooped itself taking the gearbox with it! goodbye £1500

Hmm, interesting approach on the exhaust front Wardy. Thanks for your post, I think you may have saved me some valuable pennies. As for the SMF, I completely agree with your views, I just want to be able to give the car some beans as and when I like and not worry about clutch problems. Don't get me wrong I'm generally a very conservative driver but would like to be confident as possible that I'll have no more troubles.

Wardy, I take it you ran a FMIC with your setup?

Ooh Banana Tobacco that must have been an emotional moment. I understand your opinion, but I reckon I'll keep the DMF- partially for the feel and partially as it'll keep the cost down! From what I've read from Wardy I may well be on the blower to TD in the morning. That is if Allard can't sort a good deal out on a VT2 and a FMIC package.

Looks like it'll be either Allard turbo & FMIC, or TD turbo & Forge FMIC.

got a CR Turbo's GT1749VB hybrid with a Sachs paddle clutch & Jabba SMF on my Ibiza. it goes alright.

the vibration & chatter from the SMF is only there when you're sat still and the quicker revs and better shifts more than make up for that

Allard VT2 and the stage 2 TD turbo (comparable) are both going to set you back about a grand. I ran the VT2 at 221bhp and 360 lb.ft before getting bored. I gather the same turbo is running STILL on the red fabia I sold the turbo to (the owner of of course:D) at 230bhp, and still going even now. That turbo is about 6 years old now! :D I've had a bigger turbo, blown that, and another turbo since selling it, so there is no doubting how well made the VT2 is. Of course, I've yet to hear of a TD stage 2 blowing, so probably equally as good, if not exactly the same turbo internals put into a VNT17. :)

The aim of modifying is key here, and it will be different for different people. There's no doubting the performance benefits of a SMF setup, that's clear to see. But I knew it would drive me to distraction when I had to sit in rush hour, city centre traffic. Did the benefits outweigh the negatives for me, in my case? No. Doesn't mean it's not the right option for someone else though :)

And yes, I ran a Forge FMIC with my setup.

I think well over £1000 including fitting, yup. But you seem to need a turbo fitting anyway. Allard's price for a VT2 was £795, though I think that + VAT.

Price of turbo alone going by current Turbo Dynamics prices is £1018-1039 for Stage 1 or stage 2 resp.

If you need one now-ish, try speaking to Allard/TD. As I understand it, the hybrids are built to order. Standard Garrett turbos for the 150 Golf etc are available off the shelf from TD among others though.

Thanks for all your replies everyone, always good to hear from those who are more informed & have done it themselves.

Quick update, after speaking with Forge, Turbo Dynamics, Allard and Ben @ Shark Performance a number of times today I've finally ordered an Allard (PD150) VT2 Turbo and FMIC with pipework.

PM sent.

So you have ordered the Allard fabia FMIC, with its unique routing? Out of interest, how much was it? :)

I already have it but am thinking about getting a brand new IC bit as mine is starting to proper fade/go dull.

  • Author

It retails at £590, perhaps as a repeat customer you'll do better.

Unique routing? Is it difficult to install? Does it come with instructions?

I hope it comes with instructions. It's not too difficult, although to get mine through the gap in the slam panel, some of the slam panel "mouth" had to be cut away. You might not have that issue. :) You can see how it goes from the top of the IC to the inlet in this shot. :)

Ooh err, that does look interesting! Many thanks for the photos, sure they will help. At least that routing negates the requirement for the OEM plastic boost pipe above the standard SMIC, looks much more sturdy.

If you are getting another and need it fairly soon, maybe contact Allard in advance. I was told today it may take 7-10 days for mine. Hope that helps.

Well, mine has been on since about August 2005, so is not going to be in urgent need of replacement. Just depends how much of an intercooler tart I decide to be.....

I see. Well that is encouraging, as was your earlier post about your old VT2. Spoke with a chap called Alan earlier, very helpful.

Jason - you're only thinking of swapping because it's going a bit dull? Get a polisher and metal polish on it then! :D

Glad you're on the way to getting sorted anyway Clarkey B)

Have used metal polish and aluminium de-oxidiser chemical gunk. It did improve but there is some serious engrained gunk that's not coming off without some kind of machine based work. Plus the fins are impossible to actually polish due to them being so fragile. Using the aluminium brightener was the best I could hope for with the fins.
