Water Pump Removal

Featured Replies

Good afternoon, all.

I've not long bought a tidy Mk1 vRS and I have a couple of queries. I've had a good dyke around the search, and even google for other 1.8T related posts.

The car had it's cambelt changed at around 64k (It's up to 78k now), as per the recommendations. However, for whatever reason, the water pump wasn't replaced. I actually spoke to the garage who done the work, Volkswerk of Middlesbrough, and their mechanic stated that it was inspected and deemed not necessary to replace.

I've noticed that theres a few patches of water, at various points under the car, when started and warming up. Now this could be from the aircon, or condensation build up in the exhaust system, or the water pump on it's way out. It runs superb, get's up to temp nicely and doesn't run above half way on the temp gauge. The climatronic blows ice cold to red hot.

Would it be worth having the cambelt and everything done again for the sake of replacing the water pump, or can I get away with just replacing the pump itself? I have a good mechanic who will be able to sort the labour side of things for realistic rates.

Just after a little advice on this one..

Rgds,

Keith.

I know aircon leaks as it has a drain plug on pass side on the bulkhead as i thought my was leaking, coolant, just watch when u park up and check to see if its cold or warm or run with air con off to see if it still does it

If the level in the header tank isn't going down, it's unlikely that you have coolant leaking from the water pump.

If your water pump isnt leaking & showing no signs of over heating etc i personally would not replace it. my octy had its cambelt replaced at 80k by a skoda dealer & again had no water pump replacement. its due again next year(car is now on 125k) this time im replacing it myself & i will replace pump this time for peace of mind. :)

Cheers for the comments.

Suppose it comes down to, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." As far as I can see, it's alright, but I'm not going to be running it properly for another month, still running my Supra until it sells. (I seem to bounce between VAG and J-spec)

I'll make a note on the coolant reservoir and ensure that it's not the coolant that is leaking out. I think it's only the aircon and the water that builds up in the exhaust, but it is rather worrying.

Looking to fit an oil catch can and rid the car of clogged up hoses, just seems to be one of those cheap(ish) mods which massively benefit the car. Don't mind a bit of hands on fettling either. :)

Rgds,

Keith.
