Uneven edge wear around the drivers side front tyre

Featured Replies

For the last couple of set of tyres on my VRS SE i seem to be getting a uneven wear on the edge of drivers side front tyre.

3/4 of the tyre wears evenly but the other quarter seems to be worn 1/2 of an inch further in.

I assume that if this was caused by a buckled wheel would show up as they balance the tyre.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this?

Cheers,

Ste

Have you had a suspension alignment/geometry check done? This would be my first port of call.

Ever had tracking checked out?? might be worth the expense, if tyres are wearing unevenly, across width of tyre, not unless you do a lot of hard cornering??emoticon-0144-nod.gif

Uneven tyre wear can also point to shock-absorber being knackered, because of poor oscillations being corrected, by the shock-absorber??

Try bouncing the corner on offending tyre side pressing down on top of wing edge, then compare it with opposite side.

Car should return quickly to rest position and stop bouncing as soon as you stop pressing on wing- - - if continues bouncing,

shock-absorber is the fault, suggest renew both sides.

The problem is that its wearing unevenly around the diameter of the wheel.

i would assume that if it was tracking then there would be an even band of wear around the tyre. But, for example, at 12 o'clock on the tyre there is 1/2 inch of wear but at 9 oclock and 3 oclock there is hardly any. something makes me think its either a buckled wheel, or bearings or something like that because the company i bought the tyres from didnt say anything when i bought the tyres and had them tracked. its the second set of tyres where this has happened.

i think i probably need to get it into a dealer who will actually look at it when its on the list of things to do... (Shame on you derek slacks!)

You can still balance a wheel thats slightly buckled on a regular tire balance machine, it just take a lot of weight. Have a look at the wheel, if there's more than about 50g of weight on the wheel in question thats probably what it is. Only other think i can think off is constant heavy breaking creating flatspots on which the car always skids (before the abs takes control).
