DIY Rear Axle Bush replacement guide

Featured Replies

Cheers,

They came this morning, from www.vwspares.co.uk.

Just one thing is bothering me. Should the nut for the rear bush be oval shaped? The ones I got (febi bilstein) are, which seems a bit odd to me.

The nut is not oval shaped. Do you mean nut or the back of the bush?

I mean the nut.

These are the ones I bought:

Nut for rear axle bush

You can just see it in the picture. The hole in the middle isn't truly round, it's more of an oval shape, and as such, doesn't fit on the bolt smoothly.

Ah I see what you are talking about now, kind of confused me stating oval shaped.

N90323706 is not the right part number for the rear axle bush. That comes up as some kind of front wishbone spindle nut for a golf MK2/3

You need part number N10106402 and bolt N10409903.

Hmm, weird. The guy from AVS said they were the right ones.

I need to get the damper bolts from the dealer anyway, so might as well get all the bolts from them.

Cheers!

Trust me the guy from AVS is talking ******

The ones i replaced then with are the same as i took off and same as drawing on ETKA.

you can go to Audi, VW, skoda or Seat dealer which ever is closer to you, as the parts are the same.

I have ordered some of these too. Gonna do it when the weather is good and I have a day off. Along with servicing parts and vRS mats its all come to 186 pund lol. Oh and a new LCR splitter as it dunt look right without one. Gonna try warmin it up tho this time to get it right round the bottom of the bumper. Hope it dunt take me 7 hour to do the bushes tho lol

I would expect you could do the bushes a lot quicker Billy now you have my guide

Should not need to warm the splitter up. if you get it dead centre and then start curving it round one side at a time you can get it nice. I tried to use the old holes for my second splitter but they were out, compared to the new one being positioned. I managed to use some holes though. Might be easier to take bumper off if you use the old holes and screw downwards into the splitter, then remove splitter and screw upwards into the bumper. Just a thought

yea spose lol,

I Have already had 2 on lol, the first:

This last one:

The first is how a lot do it as that is how the splitter is shaped. to get it like the second you need to cut wedges out to let you bend it, however it is really hard to get it right to the edge on the 2 far corners without bending or rumpling the plastic so I thought if I warmed it up to make it slightly softer I could get it right round the outer edges?

We shall see, I prefer taking the bumper off tbh as it does make it easier to manouver and get to.

Wish me luck with the Bush lol, think ill need it.

I prefer the look of the splitter in your first pic. It is nice and level and feathers nicely into the corners (sides) of the bumper. Your second pic in bends down in the middle (need to cut more off the uprights) and the side it sticks out too much IMO.

LOL see now the first one I didnt like as it pinched the front end. I also cut too much off the mid parts in the first lol, I wanted it to look like the std LCR as they bow down slightly.

Thats not really a good angle to show what I mean lol.

Totally off topic here lol

WOW Mark,

Them Bushes are mahoosive lol. Just picked mine up today, much cheaper than the Super PRO ones lol(£95ish) £35 ish for the pair

Yep they are Billy, compared to the standard Octy VRS bush

It was a toss up for me for the super Pro or Fab VRS bushs and price won.

Mark,

Is that press an M10 or M12 bolt? and whats the plates? I have got a M12 rod and some nuts that I am gonna make up all being well. Also what length bolt is it? I have the M12 thats 180mm long. not quite 2x the length of the bush.

I am going to tackle them next wed all being well. also gonna service the car and put the CAI back on.

Ive got some new black hose and the small breather hose in black(Ill post picks when I get them) Also decided to paint the CAI pipe black so it looks all the same. We shall see.

Hi Billy,

The Bolt is M12,

The plates were a right angle bracket (purchased in Wickes (a roof batten bracket) around £3, which i angle grinded the right angle part off to become two plates.

The plates contain a number of holes that were M10 holes(so drilled them out to M12)

will measure the length of bolt for you. It was the longest full threaded M12 in B&Q

Ther is a longer bolt in B&Q but it was not fully threadee so no use.

cheers mark,

I got the large flat one lol, got 2 of them so it wont bend(just in case).

I think its the same one I got, the B&Q shelves were in poo state and things were everywhere. I have lots to do and little time to do it, the K&N filter came today, will I need to oil it first or do they come ready to use? Ive painted the CAI pipe too and I recon it will blend in with the engine cover and Batt cover. Just need to sort out some silicone pipe in black too.

Hi Billy the bolt i used measures 150mm long.

Do not oil your K&N, they come pre oiled

going for the black look are we...

matches the car lol

cheers, ill post some pics when I get it all sorted. gonna do the LCR splitter while the bumper is off and do the gear box n engine oil changes too. also got the pollen filter to change and the rear beam bushes. gonna be a busy few days next rest period lol.

also need to put the shed up and go back up home to get my std suspension for Fatty as he needs the fronts to see if it sorts his probs out lol. I just think its the way he drives lol........ (runs and hides)

then off on hols in 6 weeks lol so all needs doing before then.

thanks to the guide it should be easier.

billy

Just done one side, but managed to break the plastic bit on the end of the bush (The one which is a wavy shape, towards the inside of the car.

I'm not taking it out again, and the metal insert through the bush goes right to the end anyway, so the bush is the same overall length.

I'll see how it goes. Will probably do the other side tomorrow.

What a PITA!!

Ops.. Should be ok as the shaft goes to the end.

Taking out would be a right pain.

Did you make sure you alinged the bush up to the beam.

takes a bit longer than you think to do the job don't it.

How did you find getting the old bush out.

Edited by Bowders1

Yeah, tell me about it, takes ages doesn't it

Getting the old bush out was a nightmare, took me nearly an hour!! Turns out it wasn't that bad anyway, so the rubber was quite stiff. I used a drill for some of it, along with a hacksaw (Take the blade out and thread it through the bush), and a chisel and big hammer.

Gonna have a crack at the other side, might be easier now I know how it goes together etc. Might try a hole cutter, see if it works any better on the old bush!!

Oh, and yes, I aligned the bush according to the lemforder diagram
