Using blu-tac for clay?

Featured Replies

I read about using blu-tac as a stand in for a clay bar on detailing world, but since I don't have an account on there I thought I would ask here. Does this sound sensible to any of you pros? :S

ask our resident detailing god, Baker21 ;)

Pipped me to it! i was going to say the same, pm baker21 im sure he can help you! he knows his stuff. B)

lol, no it won't work. Blu Tack is an adhesive, it doesn't contain any abrasive particles.

Nope, won't work. Has no ability to remove the contaminents from the paintwork.

Nice idea though :)

Steve

Blu Tack is only good for removing Blu Tack

The bluetak will actually slip in a very similar way to clay and might well pick up some of the gunk. (Product version depending)

As to how effective it might be compared to a dedicated clay is a different matter but regardless I wouldn't take the risk of paint damage to save £20.

Little bit late on reading this one guys, was out on a 'Night Drive'............. :smirk:

Looks like it's already been answered though, some people on DW have tried this with some success but to be honest clay is so cheap it's not worth using something that isn't designed for a specific application, it's like trying to remove tar without something like Tardis, it's flipping hard work and will take hours...............

What clay are you tending to use at the moment Mr B?

I'm finding the Bilt Hamber stuff good - pick-up rate is good, and it's a proper bonus being able to use water with it, instead of gallons of QD!

Good old Elite Car Cares Yellow Fine Poly Clay:

Good value for money and performs the same as Sonus Green Clay IMHO, I have some of the Bilt Hamber stuff and granted you don't have to use a QD but I didn't get on with it too well..................

Besides I love my Megs Last Touch............... :D

OK mate, fair enough. Might try some of that next time I need some then.

I love LT too, great as a final product. I didn't find it great to use with clay though, thought it was a bit too oily? QD works best IMO, but then Meg's started including two bars and one QD bottle in the clay pack? It needed to be the other way round! :S

Thanks for the input guys, I had suspicions similar to yours, but this is what a forum is for of course! emoticon-0148-yes.gif

EDIT: Furthering this on the topic of the Bilt Hamber stuff, would it be a good idea to use it with de-ionised water instead of tap water? Having never clayed before I wouldn't know how much lubricant it requires, but Wilkinsons sell litre bottle of de-ionised water for like 60p.
