Automatic boot lock...

Featured Replies

Whilst out of town at the weekend (about 80 miles out of town), SWMBO decided she needs something from the boot of the Octy. So I hand her the key and continue my banter.

About 5 mins later she comes in crying mumbling that she can't get the keys.. After I've calmed her down she tells me that she's put the keys down to get something from the boot and then shut the boot with the keys on the inside.

Now as I've told her which buttons to press previously (Lock and Unlock only - don't play with other buttons), not a problem - I just open the boot... ahh.. it's locked.. Nevermind, surely the doors are open..

Yep - she's used the boot release button, which locks the bugger (and alarms it) once the boot is closed.

We managed to get in after many hours, as I had a relative fetch my spare set from the house.. Which is lucky as the other 2 options were Skoda Assist (who would probably send RAC to break a window) or Locksmith from my insurance company (who would probably do even more damage).

Now I have never had a car with this feature before, so this is a new one on me - but I WILL be learning from my mistake. I'm sure I'm not the first and won't be the last..

Draw your own moral from this tale - I'd daren't say - "don't let the woman have your car keys".. :D

Glad it all worked out ok, and if it makes you feel any better, you're not the first and I'm sure you won't be the last.

Not just the ladies -seen blokes at work do it -was a ford focus with RAC cover -he was told that it was "self inflicted " and chargeable in the makers cover .In the end he got them pit under his own personal cover .Did it once with an old Cavalier -opened boot ,lifted lid halfway up ,locked it again ,put keys down inside then shut it .AA opened it using a battery connection to somewhere under bonnet and crash sensor .

If you know somebody in your area with VCDS you can turn this "feature" off :)

Didn't know it was actually switchable with VCDS, so there you go :)

Can you remember which section it's in Mark? Somewhere in Central Convenience?

Not off the top of my head, but I know I turned if off for somebody with a MK II Octy.

It could possibly have been coding the car to tell it the keys were only the 2 button type.

I'll have a dig around next time I'm hooked up to a car, but that might be a while.

I like the feature - but it should have some safety check on it.

e.g. internal sensors that sense the key is inside (or near to the car) and only lock when it's a mtr or so away.

Or even a timed delay lock and alarm, programmable from VCDS. 10 sec after boot closed, lock and alarm.

FWIW, the RAC wouldn't have just put the window through - DAMHIKT....

I've seen the AA open a Fabia easily without damage but best not to publish the method here.

Was it an old fabia?

yea they called it the scrappage scheme, everything work on the cars then

I am paranoid about this particularly with the dog in the boot so I'm worried about locking him in, to try and avoid it I unlock the boot without removing the keys from my trouser pocket.

One of my brother's friends was up from Warwick and popped the car into a garage to get new tyres which went a bit wrong when they managed to lock the key inside the car and the guy had no spare key with him...in the end the garage had to pay someone to come and break into the car. I managed to lock myself out of a Metro a while back but thankfully not done it since then.

John

I locked the keys in my old Metro once. Borrowed a piece of bendy plastic from a nearby house and let myself back in.

I just open the car with the main open button and keep the keys in my pocket. I am reminded of this "feature" every so often if I just get something from the boot and after 30 seconds of being "just in the boot" the car auto-locks again. I have simply got used to opening the car and putting the keys back in my pocket straight away.

Same here with a Vauxhall Nova just as we were about to go into a theatre. Scrounged a wire coat hanger from a nearby hotel and one push down and up through the window seal unlocked it.. Don't think I'd get away with that on the Roomster

Yup, having no spare key until recently I was paranoid about locking the keys in the boot and a couple of times have panic whilst scrabbling through all my pockets in the very brief window of time before the boot re-locks.

Interestingly, but not really useful... I was sat in my car earlier, engine off, ignition off but keys in the barrel. Doors all unlocked, drivers door open and windows open.. just to see if it worked I held the boot button in on the fob... it didn't open the boot???

Ha Ha,

I had a similar incident recently whilst collecting a roofbox from a fellow briskodian. Some 200 miles from home, no spare keys, somehow the lock button must have been pressed in my pocket. I gave the keys to SWMBO to hold whilst I attached the roof box.

Asked SWMBO to pass something from the glovebox, she puts keys on passenger seat, I close the door to gain better access to the roof box et voila!!

Car is locked, keys on passneger seat, J5 Jnr sound asleep in his car seat

Called skoda assist and the RAC were on scene in 40 minutes or so. Thankfully J5 jnr was still fast asleep if a little warm, and didn't even bat an eyelid when the alarm went off when RAC man effected entry :giggle:

Yup, I remember seeing the boot release option somewhere in VCDS.

So did RAC via SkodaAssist do any damage? Just so I know for the next time.. and do they carry a large hammer I can hit SWMBO with for the next time she locks the bloody keys in the car.

Nope. Airbag like a blood pressure collar in the top of the door frame and a long metal coathanger

I take it this doesn't damage the car?

Not to my knowledge. the opening that the airbag creates is no more that 5mm tops. just enough space to get the metal rod inside and hook keys and or press door relase button on the remote.

You sign a disclaimer anyhow to begin with that I'm sure indemnifies the RAC against any damage.

Ahh.

She locked them in the boot.. so no joy on that one there then..

It is on my Leon, so I'd imagine so.
