Colsay, where in Scotland are you? I am in fife and have VCDS if you want the DRL's activated, or at least I can try too.

Steve

My 2009 FL Elegance has DRL. Activated by dealer for no charge, a week after purchase, as were also auto locking doors. Seems to depend on the competency of dealers. Gordon Lamb of Chesterfield were fine and gave me various options, as discussed on this forum previously.

Getting a few flashes from people who think I've got my fog lights on. Hilarious as they seemed to be oblivious to the new Golfs and Audis with the DRL, in the vicinity.

Did you have this done recently, and was there a charge? Was it just a case of connecting the car to their workshop computer? Thx in advance..

Must have been one of the pioneers from a past thread.

If you've got the option on MaxiDot enable Daylight Running Lights...

I didn't but now I do.

The daytime running lights on my Elegance, in spite of the bulbs in the foglamp units, were not originally activated. They are now via the dealer's VCDS and I had several options. Fronts only either in the Maxidot or not, with or without rear lights or by using dipped headlights set up as DRLs. (not sure how that worked as opposed to just turning on low beam) I took the first option and the ability to control them now appears in my Maxidot menu. When in the on position the fog integrated DRLs illuminate as soon as the ignition is switched on and extinguish if the side, low or high beam lights are turned on.

As far as I know, on UK cars, only the F/L vRS comes from the factory with the DRLs activated.

Why, what's the logic behind that Mr Skoda

That's because the new Golf and Audi DRL's are in the headlight clusters.

On the non vRS Octavia's they are next to the fog light which is more likely to confuse other drivers into thinking you have your front fogs on.

They'll learn when all cars have them!

From a personal point of view, I think the ones in the fogs, and even the VRS LEDs, are mounted too low down to be of any use, and would always choose the dipped headlights (and importantly for me -- rear lights as well) option -- i.e. Scandinavian.

Not sure I understand that logic?

DRL's are designed to allow you to be seen by other road users, therefore their height is irrelevant, if you can see the front of the oncoming car you can see the DRL's regardless of their location...

Sorry but I think there is a large flaw in your logic between brake lights and DRLs. Surely the idea of high brake lights is so you can see cars braking many cars ahead so you can start to brake earlier (predict what is going to happen). This is not really the same with DRLs. If you are at the back of a line of traffic it does not really matter that a car waiting to pull out can or can not see your DRLs since they will see the line of traffic (if not then they probably need to get their eyes checked!!!). Hence they are not going to pull out anyway.

DLR have several purposes to raise visibility in day time but possibly murky conditions but also to change the form of the on coming vehicle so that motorists, particularly pulling out from side roads, to notice andf correctly gauge distance of on-coming vehicles.

When cars have just 2 headlights on, and those headlights are about 1.5 metre a part, road user will subconsiously estimate the distance. There are some very good studies about car drivers, who kill dozens of motorcyclist a year by pulling out on to main roads in to the path of motorcyclist, about 3/4 of motorcycle accidents are of this type. Conclusions were that distance were poorly judged and the motorist actually subconsiously "saw" the vehicle but did not recognise it as a phsical threat and pulled out anyways. In the US they have run DLRS for decades and have much data about it. I say more lights and with changing patterns and form mean less likely accidents. I was hoping to get DLRs in the strip format like wife's TSI VRS but I think I will get small rounds light it seems on my L&K on order!

But there are plenty of instances in heavy traffic where vehicles are travelling too close to each other to be able to see the lower part of the front of the car.

In which case you would have clear visibility of the car infront, which if it also had DRL's would alert your attention to both vehicles, hence the DRL's served their purpose regardless of their location.

Thanks for the offer of help - much appreciated. Have sent you a PM.

Anyone near Durham able to activate DRL's on a new Octavia for me?
