Ash tray lid

Featured Replies

The spring loaded lid over the ash tray just in front of my gear lever that pops up if pressed down and stays down when pushed down won't.

Stay down that is . It has decided to stay up and open permanently. Swine of a thing. Anyone had this? Is it easy or a pig to put right?

Please. And thank you.

Make sure that in inner (removable) tray in sitting correctly...

Not something to do with a rather large hammer is it?

The issue you are asking about can happen if the inner tray is not sitting correctly - try removing it and then seeing if the lid shuts/opens correctly...

Fair enough. Tried that still not closing.

Oh dear! Thank you for your interest. Sincerely. But. With the greatest possible respect do you really think I have not checked every possibility before asking for help ?

Any idea what the answer is to my original question? This gaping hole in front of me annoys out of all proportion !!!

Well without being rude mate, many people overlook the obvious, so it's good to rule it out..

Check the runners are not blocked with any debris as it has to pop over at the back.

Everything was normal. I pressed down and the lid silently slowly rose. I put a few coins in the tray --toll money safe deposit- and pressed the lid down same as hundreds of times and---it rose again. No noises made at all --no snapping noise or twanging or grating or scraping or anything. Just now refuses to stay down.

Very very annoying and I'll bet it will cost a shed load of dosh to fix the blasted thing. Unless someone can advise on a DIY cure.

Can you explain the runners idea a bit more please?

runners are the plastic bits at the edge.

Take the whole thing out and make sure there is no debris in the plastic bits on the lid that go down to the tray area itself.

The mechanism can get blocked open or closed if one of the two paths gets blocked.

Many thanks. I've checked as well as I can and everything is clear. The failure occurred in the time taken to explain what happened and all while I was watching--if you see what I mean. Press down---open then press down and -----open. Very clever.

I went to the local dealer. € 95 plus labour. Thanks a bloody lot. I really don't fancy taking it to bits to be honest what with the gear change sticking up in the middle of it all.

AND I will have no idea what I'm looking at. Is the "stay down" mechanism electrical or hydraulic, rubber bands, lumps of blue tack, or is there an Elf in there which would explain why there are never as many Werthers as we think there should be.

Seriously how does it work ?

I seem to remember (but not 100% sure) that it's a spring which determines which path in the channels the rod takes. One allows it to stay down, the other pushes it open.
