Spare Wheel

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm brand new to this forum (and Skoda), enjoying both so far. Mine's just a basic 59 plate, 1.2 HTP, 6 valver but that's OK as my wife drives it mostly (I still prefer motorcycles). I'd like to ask a question please ..............

The car came with no spare wheel (just a repair kit and pump). This is new territory for me - I think I'd prefer a spare wheel, even if it were a space saver.

Rather than buying one from a Skoda dealer, what model of VW or SEAT uses the same 5 bolt wheels? Just thought I could pick one up off ebay since they must be more plentiful than Skoda items.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Hi and welcome,

Most things to do with wheel and tyre size can be found on the Skoda Germany web site as they take tyre safety much more seriously than we do, plus they tend to fit winters as well.

My link

The following PDF document My link from the above site lists all the approved rim and tyre size for all modern Skoda vehicles.

Regards,

TP

Hi and welcome aboard.

When i bought my Fabia i paid for a spare wheel whihc was £45.

Standard size is 15inch by 6, pcd 100, offset is 43 so anything with 5x100 stud pattern will fit.

You can probably get a spare off that auction site or you can get a set of alloys and use one of your existing steels as a spare.

Thanks for the replies I've had so far. TP, that Skoda Germany site link is very informative.

Our new Fabia II vRS comes with a spare.....apparantly!!

  • 2 weeks later...

I am purchasing a new 1.6tdi se shortly and had the option of a spare or no spare, I went for the no spare option but have chosen to purchase a spare from my dealer at £45.00. Aparantly the weight of a spare tyre in the car will cost approx £65 per year in extra fuel and about 2 gms extra co2! how they work that out i never know! So the tyre kit will be in the car for emergencies and the spare will be at home in the garage for running to the workshop to get a new tyre/puncture repair. What i dont know is how much a new tyre puncture kit will be if i use the one in the car? any ideas?????

Like you i didnt opt to buy the spare wheel, as I understood from the `salesperson` that i could buy it as an afterthought...OK fine like you i decided to buy it later and after 8 weeks I`ve tried to order one to be told that the price is now £120 oh sorry less a very generous 10% discount

They are now saying that I was told the price doubled if you didnt order it with the car, this despite mine being already built at the time of order..They certainly didnt I can assure you.....Did your dealer supply it at the brochure accessory price or were you ripped off as well...or has anyone any similar stories.......Apparantly they agree I can still buy anything out of the brochure catalogue at the printed price but not the spare wheel

Needless to say this is generating an irate complaint to Skoda UK as well as the owner of the muliple dealerships I regret buying it from!!!.......views welcome

UPDATE

Just spoken to SUK who are all over the place on this one..firstly saying its an individual dealers decision, then after putting me on hold and taking advice back tracked..They said after the car purchase it becomes an `accessory` and you have to pay the going rate.....fine ,please explain why I can buy any OTHER accessory from SUK brochure at the printed price after purchase of the car but not the wheel and tyre??...err err....sorry no they cant but they wont sell me one at £49 after purchase as that is their rule...fine, so why havent SUK made that clear in THEIR own brochure?????err err cant answer that one eitherthis is after putting me on hold and speaking to someone else........appears to be run by inflexible muppets to say the least...

Anyway i have spoken to Trading Standards at Morley, Leeds who appear to take a rather different line from SUK and are looking into the legal whys and wherefores as they dont think SUK are as squeaky clean as they hope they are........might still all end in nought but at least I get to fling some **** in their well deserved direction....

Oh Yes also have the e mail address for Dougal Keith, should anyone else require it...do let me know ;)

PS anybody know a decent dealer who will supply at the brochure price...ta

Best of luck with this but I will be very surprised if you get anywhere.

The "spare" wheel is a factory fitted option and is shown as such in the brochure. It is not a retailer supplied option - refer to the brochure where that is clearly shown.

I think your claim should be directed at the dealer - they are the ones who misled you that it could be supplied for £45 by themselves.

As I said best of luck with this - lets know how you get on. If you do get a result out of SUK then there will be a shed load of people (a lot of whom are on this forum) who have paid the dealer "enhanced" price who will be piling in after you.

emoticon-0106-crying.gif to hear your having these issues.

The spare is a factory fit option, not dealer fit (two different things) but if the car is in stock without a factory fit option that can be retrofitted on order then you should be able to get the factory price. By the sounds of it they have tried to get out of this by conning you into ordering later without telling you it will be as a kit at full parts price :(

About right for the dealer mentioned from my brief experience of this outfit. Sadly took over my excellent dealership (in my opinion anyway) just before I spoke to them about a price for a new car for my wife. DK wanted 1K more then anyone else plus the PX as deposit before delivery of the new car as a final offer and expected me to accept this as I had bought there before :S

Think you would struggle to find any dealer willing to supply the kit at factory fit price unfortunately. Best you can hope for is TS to come good, otherwise some negative press might work. Years ago spoke to Auto Express in regard to a disagreement with a dealer; amazing how quick things change when a jurno from the mag rings the dealer principle for their side of the story for next weeks copy ;)

You may get a spare that way, in essence you are asking the dealer for a discount on the spare wheel retail price. But from my personal experience where I have bought ex stock (an Octavia in 2009) you will have to pay full price - circa £120-130 (to include the jack etc).

However in the case of ex stock vehicles, I noted when I bought my wife's Fabia last month that every Fabia on the boat that was not allocated to a specific purchaser had a spare wheel as an "extra". Looks like, SUK are listening to their customers at least in those admittedly limited circumstances. Just wish they had done it when I got my Octavia.

The issues about spare wheels has been discussed to death on loads of threads on this forum. About time for a sticky methinks.

TRADING STANDARDS UPDATE

Firstly thanks for your views and comments on this little problem...Just had an interesting call from West Yorks Trading Standards who tell me that Civilly SUK can charge what they like for the wheel/tyre so no comeback there, However they have looked very closely at Skoda`s blurb and think that they have a criminal case to answer under Consumer protection legislation...They agree that nowhere does it make it clear that if you dont buy the spare at the time of sale you have to pay double for it and that is a criminal offence apparantly.....This has now been passed to the Legal Beagles at Buckinghamshire Trading Standards (Milton Keynes) who will shortly ask Skoda some very awkward questions........at the least it sounds like its going to cost the pennypinching ******* a fortune to have to recall and pulp all their blurb and re print it............Poetic Justice indeed :rofl:

Just a shame that their dealers in Leeds appear to have got out from underneath it...I will keep you all posted :p

I collect my new model Skoda Fabia SE 70 on 1st September (standard alloys). I opted for the steel spare wheel rather than the inflation kit. As I understand things, the price in the catalogue is for a spare to be supplied with a new car, rather than the standard inflation kit. This means that the cost of supplying the wheel has the cost of the inflation kit deducted from the 'usual' spare part price. As my car has been bought under the VAT FREE (!) deal, ANY accessories supplied in the purchase are VAT FREE! too, including the wheel.

I was informed that the wheel supplied is ONLY A TEMPORARY, get-you-home wheel limited to 50mph and should be replaced as soon as possible. Apparently it is the same dimensions as the normal steel wheel but made of a 'lesser quality steel'. If owners decide to buy a replacement STEEL WHEEL I presume this would cost more, but using it with alloys on the other three would legally, probably still limit speed to 50mph. The tyre on the spare would have to be bi-directional which the standard ones may not be.

I cannot vouch for the veracity of all this, just my understanding of what I was informed.

On another matter, I agree that SKODA UK call handlers are no use in handling basic logic - not for Happy Drivers.

that's great news, thanks for the update and all this work.

on a differen but similar subject the side protection strips are an optional extra of £30.00 in the brochure but the price if you buy them afterwards is £27.00. However in the accessories brochure it's just over £26.00. I know it's only £3 quid. I can only assume the extra £3.00 in the brochure is for fitting / sticking them on.
