Water Ingress in drivers footwell

Featured Replies

My 05 plate Octavia 2.0tdi elegance has been suffering water ingress for some time.

It was returned to the dealership near the end of its warranty where

the seats and carpet were removed and exterior sprayed with water to try

and determine the point of entry. However, this failed to identify the source

or entry point. The wipers and wiper plastic grill have recently been removed with no obvious

blockage. Has any other owner suffered the same fate? Where might the entry point be?

The pollen filter cover isn't seated properly maybe.

See Honest John in the Daily Telegraph motoring section.

How about bonnet release cable grommet ?

Drivers side, bottom of sill tray ( think octy 2 has it in the same place ... )

Check that the drain holes in the bottom of the doors are allowing water out. I find water collects in the doors if I park the car pointed uphill but it pours out when I open the doors and doesn't make it into the car at all. There's a procedure for sealing the doors behind the doorcards to prevent water from leaking into the car through the doors which might solve the problem for you.

I have a 2006 4x4 Estate, I have noticed recently a small amount of water ingress in the Passenger Footwell, upon lifting the mats a small mouldy patch was hidden!!.

I have had numerous Fabias over the years and they all have suffered the leaky door syndrome (Rear Doors), there are a number of very comprehensive and helpful posts in the Fabia Forum.

Looking at my leak closley, it appears to be coming from between the door card and the door itself and dripping onto the top of the lower door seal (very close to the kick plate plastic trim) and only when driving does the ater actualy enter the car, no doubt something to do with the yawing forces etc... whilst driving?

I rather suspect this maybe the same as previously experienced on the rear doors on the Fabia, however I will need to investigate further, I will update with my finding!!

Well, I suspicions appear to have been correct, As previously mentioned I stripped the door card from the leaking door, low and behold clear evidence that the window gear mounting plate had been leaking for some time and running down between the door card and the door.

The area between the window gear mounting plate (Galv/ zinc plated sheet) and the painted door, a small channel exists, this area was sealed with a silicone type clear sealant to around half the height of the door (in the channel area), a short time allowed for the sealant to cure and refit the door card.

Following a very wet weekend, leak appears to have been sorted!!

Water is an absolute pain to try to locate entry point into a car but anything footwell area, I would certainly consider checking to make sure it is not coming in from behind the door card.

This is common to all VAG cars. I had a Seat that did it. Ended up buying a massive role of liquorice stuff from VW to fix it.

Had the same problem with the door cards - dealer found leaks on 3 of the doors though thankfully not significant ones. My last car (VW Bora) also had the same problem.

 So the old old problem of leaking doors hasn't been sorted by now ! I will have to keep an eye on the rubber trims for water. :'(
