Fair point, I just thought that you had to have both units shown on your dashboard. Does this mean that antipodians are not allowed to take their cars to the US or UK? Certainly it is a trek, but its not totally unheard of. It's only a question, chaps, no need to jump on the "duh" bandwagon ;)

Where else is he going to drive it? Australia? They're metric as well.

In the UK and Europe we need mph and kph cos it's fairly likely we could drive in countries where either is used. Not really likely down under.

Ireland is totally KPH now

congratulation! white looks nice, I got my black one from same dealer not long ago.

Another Kiwi! Briskoda NZ membership must almost be in double figures now!

Good question. You're right to say it wouldn't happen very often, but I can think of a a few POMs that have come out here to live and found the place is not for them and they have returned to the UK. If you've bought a new car with the KPH-only speedo, would you be able to repatriate the car along with your other household possessions, given the speedo was not capable of displaying MPH? I bet it would at least need a mod to be legal on British roads.

Yeah, it does a bit, you can get euro style plates here, but they are $400, so I will be getting them, but not yet...

$400? If only...I was quoted $900 by my dealer for Euro-style plates :o. http://www.plates.co.nz/ has a government sanctioned monopoly on the issue of licence plates, and even though I said to my dealer I did not want a personalized plate, just the nice Euro surround, they said the only legal way to get this was effectively get a personalized plate at the exorbitant price. You could go the illegal way and get some plates made up off the internet, but you do run the risk of getting pinged by the police, especially in Auckland apparently.

As a cheaper, but just about as effective a solution, try this option from TradeMe. That link will be dead in a few hours when the auction closes, but I think they are regularly available from the trader, so a search for "Euro size surrounds" on TradeMe should come up trumps. NZ$39.95 + postage and they can do a Skoda logo in place of the silver fern if you prefer.

Dealer said the same to me, but they are lying. If you go to plates.co.nz, and put your own registration number in, you can get it made into a euro plate for $399...

Very interesting, thanks for that info. It's still a total rip off though isn't it? If we were generous, we might allow $50 for labour and materials, allow them a 100% mark up and we're still only at $100. What a con...

why can't you get someone to get the plates for you here and then ship them over?

Strictly speaking, it wouldn't be legal. The "proper" NZ plates when viewed from an appropriate angle display a silver fern hologram thingy. No hologram and you could be fined. Pedantic or what?

Now, having got that off my chest, where would people suggest I could order plates from that, apart from the missing hologram, look like a dead ringer for NZ Euro plates (accurate font)? To see what they should look like, see here.
