Tyres and stuff, what do you use?

Featured Replies

Just read a post made by "rk696" and it got me thinking......what tyres have people found to be good for their Octavias'

Personally i would never ever fit any type of budget tyre, only 4 points of contact with the road to keep you safe so why compromise?

When i bought my Octy it already had Dunlop Sport 2000 fitted and they seem ok, not the grippiest of tyres but not bad.

btw i am still using the standard wheels, 205/55/16. Plus standard suspension etc..

What else are people using and what have they found to be good and bad tyres for the Octavia....Discuss :0)

Richie.

I'm sure a birdy has just dropped dead in the trees out the back lol.

Do a search mate, there is lots and lots of tyre threads

Toyo T1r and Falken 452 are sposed to be good.

Also sessentas.

avon rainsport have been mentioned.

kumoh 31s

lots lol

I run Vredestein Ultrac on my everyday Spiders and there give good amounts of grip and also wear rate is excellent so i should get around 20k+ out of them.

Track/nice weather wheels run R888 (front) and Pirelli P Zero (rear),these offer alot more grip.

I never really budget on tyres and replace them at around 3mm+,purely for safety reasons.

Aye, same with all car related forums, many tyre threads. Was just curious what people have tried recently. Tyre manufacturers bring new patterns out all the time so things change pretty quickly on the rubber front ooer :o

I work for a tyre company and Michelin have already changed the tread pattern on the pilot sports 3 times this year without telling people!! (albeit small changes)

Been through the premium tyre thing ( Mich's, F1's etc), & unless you're gonna be pushing your car to the limits of grip I don't really see the point of spending that much money. Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta's are really great tyres. Put a set on my recently sold BMW320d M Sport & they were superb. Just fitted Falken 452's on my VRS, & they seem to be pretty good so far.

Vredestiens are very good tyres, but can be difficult to get hold of, as for the Falken 452's, they are very good tyres too, cheap and lots of grip, cheap as in compared to the 5 main brands :0)

452's FTMFW

LOL

I just got four of these instead of toyos after running two on the front and getting 12k plus out of them the grip difference is unoticeable as far I'm concerned, maybe my driving or may show more on a track.

Toyos lasted around 9-10 k

I have tried:

Toyo Proxes 4 (OK, but a bit wallowy and vague, wear out fast)

Goodyear Eagle NCT5 (Noisy and hopeless in snow)

Vredestein Sportrac 3 (Quiet, and corner well, but struggle to put down power)

Kumho KU31 (Quiet, corner well, and grip really good too)

Pirelli P6000 (Sh*te, slide in the wet and squeal on roundabouts, last ages though)

Dunlop SP Sport Maxx (Not bad, but quite noisy)

It's gotta be the KU31's.

Apparently, michelin pilot sport3 are good, but they're mega bucks, and the KU31's should be good enough.

When i bought the Octy it was on Michelin Primacy, quiet on motorway, useless in wet, good dry grip but squealed alot on roundabouts or very twisty roads, seemed to wear well but someone was kind enough too slash them outside the girlfriends so not too sure what sort of mileage you can get out of them.

Replaced them with Continental sport contact3, got 24,000 miles out of these, very good grip in all weathers, coped well with the snow always got me up the hill to my house. Quiet until you get too the last 3mm of tread then they get rather noisy.

Just replaced with Falken 452 not been on long, less than a fortnight, initial impressions are good, not really had chance to test them yet.

I notice you're a 4x4 owner too. I've owned few 4x4s', and I've notice they don't always like the same tyres as 2WD (either front or rear) cars.

For example, loads of people seem to rate the Vredestein Ultrac sessentas.

However, on my 4x4 I've found these to useless, to the point of being dangerous in the wet

The Toyo Proxies PX4's I had on before ( which I'd onlyt rate OK(ish) ), were much much better.

My winter tyres are Vredestein Wintertrac Extreme. These are completely different. They simply will not let go, no matter whether its sheet ice, snow, mud, gravel or tarmac.

TBH my winter tyres are better in the summer than either Ultrac sessentas or Proxies PX4 :|

On my previous 4x4 (Pug Mi16x4), I found hankook and Kumho gave loads more traction than big $ stuff from Goodyear, Pirelli, Dunlop, bridgestone, etc ...

Seems to be little logic to it, and as others have mentioned, you find a decent tyre, and they go and discontinue it

Mich PS3 are pretty good tyres, but as you say expensive, 2 Michelin PS3's cost about the same as 4 Falkens or Kumhos lol Unless you go to Kwik Fit, then one Michelin will cost the same as 4 of the others :giggle:

When i changed from the Toyo on the fornt to Kumho KU31 i noticed little difference in terms of grip,

I rekon the Dunlop Fast Response may well be pretty good for Octavia too, the Pollice down here use them a lot. along with the Conti Sport Contact.

i use avon zv5 sport tyers in the winter they are awesome! in the summer i usually use prada spec 2 but i haven't bothered changing them this year im quite impressed buy the avons!!!

Both of those quite a few pennies emoticon-0106-crying.gif

Vredestein do several tyres which seem impossible to find, but have good reviews

Vredestein Ultrac

Vredestein Sportrac 2

Wouldn't mind taking a punt on the Sportrac 2 if I could find 225/40R18 at less than £100/corner ....

I've got Hankook Ventus Evo V12s on the front and Kumho KU31s on the back

The Evos are a good balance between grip and longevity. Grip was very good in the dry in the first 3000 or so miles but not quite as good now. The Kumhos have been ok so far on the back but other members who've had them on the front have worn them out in 6k miles

Two of the local members to me run Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas and are really happy with them, one has Toyo T1Rs and has also been pretty happy with those

twas I :D

I thought so! You must've been ragging it Dave

Funny thing was it was over a winter, november until march iirc. Not really winter cars/tyres lol

Anyone tried Pirelli P Zeros?

Got a really good price on them the other day $310 each compared to Toyos at $250 and Bridgestones at $280. The P Zeros are usually over $400 each.

Much more limited choice here. I have Dunlop Direzzas at the moment which have been pretty good but $310 each to replace.

Talking about tyres, the outer wall on my front right tyre goes quickly. About 3 months ago I put the spare tyre on which was brand new, dunlop tyre. Checked it last week the outer wall thread was all gone, got it confirmed by two tyre places. So I've put a part worn on there.

I'm waiting for my dad to change the ABS sensor, driveshaft then I'm gonna get it tracked. That should stop the tyre wearing fast right?

Yup, get down to a garage that has the new camera aligntment gear, Made by Hunter and looks like a big red "T" in the garage, it is super accurate and can check alignment, toe and camber very well.

Most garages will check for free and only charge if they need adjusting.

Anyone tried Pirelli P Zeros?

Pirelli P Zero are awesome tyres, fantastic grip but they are a soft compound and wont last as long as you might like.

Standard fit for Ferrari and Lamborghini, but they last about 5k on them cars lol (not really surprised)

I had some Bridgstone Potenza SO2 fitted to a Calibra a few years back, same as the P Zero, good and grippy but too soft a compound and wear quickly.

I've heard similar about the Toyo T1Rs and Proxes - they're around $260 so a slightly cheaper alternative.

Just failed my MOT due to both rear tyres being cracked, going to swap the fronts to the back and i'm looking for a pair of decent tyres. I've been phoning around and some guy at national tyres tried to sell me a pair of Wanli, aparently they are great tyres and he's got a set on his M3 thought bull poo straight away :giggle: double checked online and i was was right lol.

Cheapest decent tyres i can find are Falken FK-452 for £165.06 a pair.

Is that a good price or does anyone know anywhere cheaper??

Just to add my local tyre place can do it for a similer price but dunno if they would be 452 or 912

Edited by Raf_75

thats a good price:thumbup:

What are the 912's like??
