Petrol or diesel? 5 or 6 speed? At least 5 different gearbox types out there on the Fabia.

sorry ,

1.4 tdi and 5 speed

:giggle:

its an age related thing, me not the car

If it only happens on down shifts it may not be the syncro. It would be worth having the cables adjusted first. Not the strongest box in the range, but not chocolate either.

thanks for your prev feel a bit happier now and if costs were low i would feel even happier :smirk:

Cable adjust takes about 30 minutes, no parts involved to 1/2 hour labour. Say £40

update to my problem

2nd gear synchro faulty and requires strip down to diagnose full extent of problem about 500.00 pounds

now this being our first skoda and sold to us on its quality and reliability, i find that on a car only 4 months out of its 3 year warranty and having only 42000 miles on the clock, i find this shocking and totally unacceptable.

together my wife and i have a combined driving experience of over 65 years and neither of us have had a vehicle gearbox failure before never mind in 42000 miles so where is the quality in this product.

the main skoda dealer we bought the car from said there may be a little goodwill available but we have to front the dismantling ( aprox 500.00) up front

i am sure that skoda will not be on our buying list again.

we had a mg zr, ok i know not the best car and quite a few faults but in the 2.5 years we had this car (with a twelve month warranty) ALL faults were repaired FOC by the dealer and they did not have to spend a penny on it apart from servicing. i was also told that skoda's quality blew the zr out of the water, well no gearbox probs with the zr( but , yes plenty of others)

obviously if this is the norm, NO MORE SKODAS.

any comment ( helpful if possible ) or advice. any one had synchro faults before in this low mileage ???

thanks

Might be cheaper to get a new gearbox of ebay and get it fitted by a VAG specialist

thanks, the cost is relevant but not the real knub of the matter, its the failure in such a short time and mileage and the obvious 'well it tough but that's the price' '

i have had many various cars over the years and never had this type of problem in fact i have a mazda about a year older and happened to mention in an 'off the cuff comment' that there was a problem with my heater while checking up on servicing prices, 'oh that's a common thing just requires another type of hose , have you got 30 mins spare come in and we will change it under our franchise warranty, needless to say who will get my mazda servicing from now on.

Might be a daft question, but are you the original (new) owner? Just wondering if you've been very unlucky and got a duff part, or if the previous owner had been a bit harsh with it ...

Not something I've heard of before - I'm pretty certain the gearbox is a standard VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat shared part ... none of my friends/family have had a gearbox failure on any of their VAG Golf/Polo-type cars (9 of them, varying in age from K-reg to 08-plate). The only gearbox fault I've heard of was on the SDI Octavia (failure at around 150,000m).

hi

nope my wife is the first owner ( pre registered car ) well driven (have to say that or i get a slap) only time we have not been the drivers is during service times .

now i think my first query has been answered and that is that its not a major failure or issue re the gearbox so i have to accept that its just a failure.

now onto my second issue , why should we be expected to be 'foot ' any bill as this is advertised as 'quality and reliable' ,and it is not of our doing .

i work in the service industry and if a product that we service for various manufactures ( at a vastly lower price point , that of 300-500 on average) should fail it would be inspected and if not c/r misuse it would be rectified foc .

so where do we go from here re dealer or skoda.. any advice ??

I agree a gearbox should last a lot longer than those miles, a lot more in fact. The 6 speed box is usually strong, but there have been a few failures reported on here. It's usually the diff carrier that fails, as it's riveted to the crown wheel. The rivets break, and punch a hole through the casing, destroying the gearbox.

I remember VAG reliability back in the 80's, just about everything was over engineered to last. Now everything is built to cost.

Also to be honest, unless the gearbox is rebuilt by a specialist, it will likely never be the same again. It's a complex triple shaft box, and they whine like a bitch if they are not rebuilt properly.

Sorry to hijack the thread but in my vRS I sometimes have trouble getting it into first gear. All other gears are fine.

Could this be syncro or could it be a gearbox mount or something?

Cheers, stephen

1st gear can be notchy if trying to select while moving. If it's hard to select from standstill, cables may need adjusted. It can also be clutch drag if the system needs new fluid or bleeding. Quite rare, but sometimes the selector assembly cross pin snaps, gears are hard to select, then finally cannot be selected when the pin drops out.

That answers that then! :) (just trying to rule out "the obvious" :))

If Skoda aren't willing to do anything about it, your only options are a] grin and bear it, or b] consult citizen's advice bureau to see if you have any legal recourse :(

I don't know how much the attitude varies across VAG brands (I thought Skoda was the best?) but I was dismayed when our Ibiza miserably failed its MOT at 4yrs / 34K miles on several points - the car was bought new by us, has been dealer serviced and is used for little more than a gentle main road commute. I've never had a car fail MOT before and have been though many of them.

It was the dealer's "oh goody, we get a chance to screw some money out of you" attitude that really hacked me off. I complained about the failures to SEAT UK and did eventually get the cost back, but as goodwill vouchers, however I think a lot of that was because one of the letters from a SEAT customer service person bordered on rude! That person doesn't work there anymore.
