Removing rusty screws

Featured Replies

Just checked and my MOT is due in a couple of days. Only fault I know of is that one of the number plate lights is out, had a quick try when I got the car and could tell they are gonna be a bitch to get out. Anyone got any tips?

You should be only with these, but make sure you have the correct size screw driver so you don't round the heads.

If you in don't give them a quick squirt of WD40 1st.

Dificult one ! About the only thing you can do is give the offending screw a few sprays of "Plus Gas" ( much better than WD 40) and leave ideally overnight. If you can build a "dam" of plastecine/ playdough/ blue-tac etc, around the screw to hold a reservoir of Plus Gas so much the better. Give another spray with "Plus Gas" next day and try to clean screwdriver recess in the screw. Put the correct type of driver in the recess and give the end of the screwdriver a few raps with a small hammer. Keeping a fair bit of pressure on screwdriver and hopefully extract the screw. If you can get new screws from dealer so much the better. Put a thin smear of copper anti-seize paste on the screw threads before you insert screw. As mentioned in previous post , it is important to use the correct screwdriver bit , i.e. Phillips , Pozi-drive , etc. You should be able to tell if it's the correct driver bit as it will seat fully in and should be snug in recess without being sloppy.

Best of luck,

If it's a hatch, you can get to the bulbs from inside. You need to pull the plastic trim out form inside the boot lid. It just unclips. The bulbs then pull out (501 wedge type).

Yup a hatch how hard is it to get the panel off?

It just pulls off

The hardest part is getting it back on again. :wonder:

That is a fun job. Can you get it back on without it rattling around? ;)

Hehe, that is the question lol!

Just be careful not to break any clips on it.

Works for the estate too. I was changing one of mine, and my father poked it, and the holder and bulb vanished inside the tailgate.....

Putting the plastic trim back on was a right PITA though

THe plastic trim..............Still scares me to this day.......Still rattles as well :(

Must of been lucky went back on without any problem lol

bought some new number plates today and tried to get the old number plate screws out, but solid as a rock, snapped a screwdriver trying to undo them :o

Thought they would be screwed into plastic retainers but seems they are screwed straight into metal lol

Theres a post somewhere that tells of lazy dealers who just drilled holes instead of using the number plate holes!

wtf i just read that!!!! i would have gone apes**t lol

think i am gonna have to drill these out, one broken screwdriver and even the impact driver was no good..

Maybe might be able to cut them off and flatten down the old screws so they are flush (omg Dremel time!!) and seal them.

Then for the double sided sticky tape

I got some mole grips on the screws, but managed to break the captive nuts on the boot lid. The screws came out though :o

Had to make some new holes then, whcih I would have have to do anyway, as the mlada boleslav surrounds are not flexible enough to used sticky pads. They just spring off at the edges because of the tension in the plastic.
