Timing Belt Broken

Featured Replies

I broke down this morning, after calling out the AA who looked under the bonnet and confirmed the Timing Belt is broken................................. Its not been towed to a garage to be looked at just yet as Im waiting for my boyfriend to get home from work to look at it.

Now - Has my car officially died and I have too move on or is there a chance to fix it and get it back on the road?

I have a 1.4 Skoda Fabia Comfort 5dr Hatchback, X Reg and the car has done 115,000 miles.

Its been good until this morning, Its not been driven since Feburary as I have been in hospital. And has only been back on the road the past couple of weeks.

I drove it into work yesterday to put it through the mot, it failed on a couple of things but only cost me £150 to get a pass. And low and behold this morning it dies on me.

Just a quick question - What parts will I need to get it fixed it I can? and whats the approx costing of buying these parts? and is it a big job? - My boyfriend is quite good with cars so for him too tinker about with it wont be a problem unless its not worth fixing!

Thanks Joanne

quite a big job,

full rebuild , probably bent valves, damaged pistons ect , :'(

it would be alot cheaper and quicker to find another engine to go in it off ebay, a garage would charge arround £150-£200 to drop it in and plug it all in ,

unless you know someone to do it,

you would need

engine

and ecu and transponders for the ignition

and to re program your key to it unless you can get the keys with the engine (but they usually sell with the locks)

Ouch! The cam belt breaking is never a good thing. :( Generally, it is a semi-catastrophic failure, requiring an engine rebuild. However, sometimes people are lucky, with the belt failing at the right point, and not much damage being done. One of my relatives was lucky - the belt in their van went, and the resultant repair bill was under £500. So, I guess, get it inspected and decide from there.

if your boyfriend is handy with a socket set tell him to take the head off and have a look , you will be able to tell if any of the valves have hit the pistons,

should only take an hour to do with the cam belt all ready off,

Just to confirm it is a 16v yeah?

If its an 8V , (mpi) it will have a chain wont it? Ive never heard of one of those breaking

How long ago was the cambelt replaced last? Perhaps you have a claim on the garage that fitted it? (I think this might be a longshot... :( )

For the record it would be interesting to know when it was last replaced - by now I'd suggest you should be on your third and replacing it in 5,000 miles...

i was thinking that.......

Sadly, chains can break too, but not very often. Sometimes it's due to tensioner failure or some other engine problem (lubrication being a big one often) causing it to break. Sometimes it just jumps round a bit after tensioner failure and bends a valve or two. Sometimes it does no damage at all depending on engine revs and load, if idling or whatever. First thing is to get it looked at properly by someone who knows the engine. It really isn't worth speculating as there are too many variables. If it's the 1.4 it is the petrol engine right?

Its what I was thinking also.

yea, i was on the same lines

Don't panic yet. If the belt simply 'broke' you may be OK; the usual mess is caused by bits coming off the belt as it fails so that the timing of valves etc doesn't match that of the pistons and the two collide. It's a pull it apart and look job. As a poster said a trawl through the ebay sourcing people may give you a younger engine at a price which makes repair uneconomical. Best of luck.

Speak to Z-cars see if they can fit a bike engine in it :giggle:

Sorry to hear that

Maybe even see if you can find a rear ended Fabia on ebay if you know some one competent in doing the transplant. When you are finished you can flog the left over bits on the forum and back on ebay. At least then you might get a chance to start the thing before hand.

x - reg - 115,000 miles. What's the car worth? You could be looking into hundreds to get it done.

Value of car? - get a quote to have it fixed - some up whether worth doing!
