Whirring/Rumbling Noise = Wheel Bearing?

Featured Replies

My car's developed what sounds like a Wheel Bearing (worn out) noise.

Whirring noise on rough road, goes away when u steer left, and gets louder when u steer right - leading me to believe it's the right handside wheel bearing.

Can be heard on most road surfaces, not all.

can also feel very faint vibration on the steering wheel and floor when the noise comes in.

Took it back to Dealers for warrenty work, and suprize suprize no fault was found. They also said they had the car up on ramps and turned the wheels by hand, and IF THERE WAS A FAULT you would see and feel the wheel vibrating, even the shock absorber would vibrate...

Anyway he then went on to say that it was more likely to be tyre noise.

The tyres are 10,000 miles old now, I had them fitted new in January. Goodyears.

I swapped them front to back around about 2-3000 miles ago, and they commented on that I should swap them back and see if the noise goes away.

well I've swapped them back, and low and behold the noise is still there...

I suspect it is a wheel bearing noise,as u can make the noise come and go if u swerve left and right, u can play a tune in essence !!

Were do I stand?

I will take it back next week to show them the noise is there, and I will take them out in the car this time too.

What other possibilities could there be other than wheel bearing?

The tyres are correctly inflated all the time (I have tyre pressure gauges which I use regularly to check pressures), the alignment was done (at a reputable garage) in March after skoda fitted a front right wheel bearing

Check the bearings yourself mate, put the front wheels up on axle stands and have a good push and pull at the top if the wheel, if it moves side to side *AT ALL* then the bearing is knackered.

Its extremely difficult to find a knackered bearing by rotating the wheel, the rumble will only really show itself at about 30-40mph+.

You should be able to feel a knocking/clicking as you push and pull. I've had to replace both front bearings on my partners fabia, 1 went at 93,000 miles.

Dave.

You can't always diagnose a noisy bearing by push/pull on the wheels when the front o f the car is jacked up. It needs to have some weight on the wheels and bearings for the noise to show up. The most likely bearing to go noisy is the front nearside as it takes the most pounding from drains/potholes/kerbs etc. and you say the front offside has already been done. It is not a hard job for any garage mechanic to change the bearing/s, any decent mechanic should realise this is wheell bearing noise and just change it.
