Good buy or Not cammy engine , but its a VW

Featured Replies

Thought i mite play around with a golf , back to basics , so the following on sale at around £1400 , much work for me to put it right , any ideas , must be same engine as the Fabia , yes

This car has the 1.4 litre engine; the car drives well, the engine performs very well however it does sound slightly cammy (almost like a quiet diesel).  This is most likely down to a noisy cam or follower and does not affect the drive.  There is an intermittent EML light which comes on  now and again. Expect that it will be on when you bid for the car.

Bearing in mind that it'll probably be slower than molasses in the winter, it would be a decent runaround for a grand.

DP (sorry) The only thing wrong with it is that it doesn't have enough mileage for its age. It has likely done lots of short trips, or been sat around doing nothing for long periods. Both of those are bad for engines, so it's not worth any more than £1k. Get it for less than that preferably.

It might be a little old lady (or man), who has thrashed the *******s off of it for every short journey. That could be the cause of the "cammy" engine

It might also be a high miler car thats been clocked down. Clocking seems to be very common at the mo.

Or it could be like the wifes ibiza 1.4 and burn oil like petrol and knocks its arse for the first few turns of the crank when cold. Sounds like a POS most of time as well, In fact I can hear her lift off the gas coming up the road and tell it's her before I can see her its that bad.

The 1.4 I have since found out is reknowned for being very fussy about oil or rather how often it's changed. Partly my fault with her car I guess although I didn't know/care about cars in those days.

I put about 2 litres a month in hers lol Asda cheap stuff FTW.

HTH

With it being the 16v, VW recommend 98 Ron petrol and not the 95 Ron

Didn't one of the 1.4 have piston ring issues.

At which point if it drank too much oil and top end pressure dropped that could explain why it sounds cammy.

Thats the one lol aparantly it's not helped by not changing the oil on time like we did :(

Soft thin bores mean no fixing with inserts either, from what I've read

Time to run some 15w-40 and hope?

Time to chuck it in the stingys and run more like

Looking for a replacement at the moment :)
