Knocky clunking gone

Featured Replies

The annoying noise I've been experiencing in recent weeks has gone :) thanks to new drop links and ARB bushes!

It was the drop links causing the problem - the bushes were fine but I swapped them just to make sure while the car was up and my tools were handy. And seeing as I'd bought a couple of spares!

Swapping the bushes was straightforward but not quite the 'easy' job I had envisaged - access to the clamp bolts tested my repertoire of spanners, sockets and dexterity :o especially to get them torqued back up again! I don't seem to remember anyone else mentioning this on here, you mischievous lot! :giggle:

I mentioned the drop links I bought in reply to another thread recently but now having fitted them I can recommend them further; they were from Express Car Parts @ £11-odd + vat each

1160600000/HD: Meyle Stabiliser Link - Skoda FABIA (6Y2) 1.9 SDI (FR/MYX)

They are from the Meyle HD range and looking at the blurb on the Meyle website:

http://www.meyle.com/EN/Spare-parts/MEYLE-HD.html

they should be a good replacement for OE links as larger joint and thicker rod (and 4 year warranty)?

Do you reckon that could be the cause of my problem? Please see my knockig noise thread.

Would bad drop links/ARB bushes fail an MOT? If it would then it can't be that as it passed one last week...

Cheers...

I have a similar noise, and an MOT on Thursday! I'm hoping now that my car will pass first time! If not, it sounds like the drop links aren't too expensive, is that right? What do you think a garage would charge?

tbh my car knocked for a while, got through an MOT fine though.

They're an easy job, so shouldn't cost much to have fitted. Don't know what the dealers charge for the Skoda parts but I doubt if they'll be less than the Meyle ones?

That's very comforting to hear! you would not believe!!

That's also very comforting, I think I'll get them fixed at some point, because the noise is slightly annoying, I guess if it's not the bushes then it'll be the drop links!

The noise sounds like it's coming from in the centre of the car, does that sound about right for drop links? Only doing it when I go over bumps and potholes, at any speeds but less noticeable over about 30mph due to road and engine noise et cetera. What are the drop links for, and does it matter if I replace them or not?

Thanks for everybodies help!

EDIT: Link in the first post doesn't work for me - is the part number for SDI's only?

Link working now?

Bet it's your drop links - sometimes I thought my knocking sounded like it was coming from further back on the car.

(The drop links connect the roll bar to the strut via balljoints at each end to allow for twisting as the bar does its job in limiting the roll of the front end when cornering)

Express car parts list all the Fabia options iirc

The reason I took so long to fix mine was that a mate who works at my local skoda dealership said: "It'll be fine, I've never seen one fall off!" And to be fair to him, for the better part of a year my car knocked, but my ARB didn't fall off :D

think I'll be changing the drop links too, and see what happens. Does anyone have a blow-by-blow, idiot's guide version of how to do this. As it's me, emphasis on the idiot please. All help gratefully received. Ta. Stewart

either way, never trust a man who has 4 thumbs...hes probably from Barnsley ;)

dunno if you guys have seen my other thread, but my suspension arm rear bushes are splitting (according to the MOT). It passed but they were advisory. Drop links weren't mentioned.

Is it worth changing the drop links at the same time as these bushes? Are they located in close proximity to each other? Does it make sense to have them done at the same time?

Mine too. I've asked the dealer numerous times to look at the knocking and they keep telling me that there's nothing wrong and 'you should expect a bit of wear and tear with the state of the roads nowadays'!

There very easy to change, only 2 bolts and there off however if they are heavily seized like mine were (originals) you may need to grind through the bolt to get them off !

Ohh what fun that was

Are there any tips to check whether these have given up the ghost? I have the knocking noise and want to check these but dont know what to look for if they are knackered.

Just been out for a drive and it makes a clunky/knocking noise both when braking and accelerating and when going over rougher than average road (most)! Also it knocked when going around a corner a few times. Could it be these drop links? They look a little cruddy and old tbh.
