Fitting a new turbo - how to get the engine to turn without starting

Featured Replies

My new hybrid turbo arrives today.

I've read when fitting it you should get the engine to turn but not start for a while, just to get the oil flowing through the turbo without it spinning to prevent damage. How might one do this fairly easily on the Fabia?

Unplug the injector loom that runs to the side of the head...

Thanks Kev :-)

Or even easier unplug the crank sensor by the oil filter.

Ah ha. Awesome! Thanks to you both :-)

Surely the turbo won't even be moving at idle, so oil will start getting around in plenty of time on tickover before any boost starts being used and the turbo actually moves? I've never done anything like this and my turbo has been on/off my car numerous times being setup :D

It is always advisable to prime a turbo before running up, the turbo will move at idle especially on a VNT turbo as exhaust gasses will be moving accross the exhaust turbine even with the blades fully open.

Maybe not 100% essential, but only takes a few seconds to do and its good practice.

I just whipped the fuse out for the injectors, dead easy. Still bloody nervous though during that first crank of the engine! :D

Yeah, I was pretty sure the turbo spins even at idle. Maybe not particularly quickly perhaps but I am trying to play it safe!

Cool. Seems like there's various different methods to achieve this pretty easily then :-) I'll unplug the crank sensor and remove the injector fuse just to be sure B)

We pulled out the fuse for the injectors (fuse 48, far bottom right 30A fuse). Job done :-)

The hybrid is on and seems to be working just fine. Haven't had it mapped to suit yet, haven't even been for a proper drive just yet. Just left it to tick over and reved (still below 2k) a bit to make sure it spins up.

Thanks to all who have helped over the past week!
