What RON fuel should I be using

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Got my skoda,

Loving my skoda!

I filled the tank the other day when I bought it with just normal fuel from BP and was wondering if it was beneficial or even mandatory on this model to run it on 'super' unleaded. I was only thinking this because I used to run my old car on super every few tanks for the fuel cleaning aspect however had no affect on performance as the ECU was only made to process up to 96 RON so above that had absolutely no help with fuel economy/performance.

Cutting a long story short should I be using Super all the time and will it benefit or outweigh the cost?

Car is a mk1 Octavia vRS

many thanks!

Oh no not again, another kitten dead, this has been covered many times before. If you look on the filler flap it tells you to use 98 ron or 95 if 98 is not available(with reduced performance). It will run better with 98 or 99 ron fuel, and you will probably get better mileage.

I'm back using tesco 99 after a few weeks on 95 as local tesco's never seemed to have any 99 and I'm seeing around 420 miles to a tank where as I'm struggling to see 330 on 95ron!! Worth the extra per litre!

sorry i seem to not be able to search properly! lol i tried but no good. under the filler cap there is residue from where a sticker was. many thanks for your help! i did notice this morning that the idle seemed a tiny tiny bit a hunt possibly down to using the fuel (i hope)

My old mk1 vRS was only ever run on 95 ron, and went well enough for me. I even had it remapped with the 95 ron fuel in mind, and the performance figures were not that far off a remapped car using 98ron.

I run mine on super unleaded,i get better mpg & the car runs alot better than when i run in on normal unleaded.

Skoda themsleves reccomend 98 ron - why use anything less? :S

Shell V-Power 99 ron, never use anything else....drop of good stuff!!!!

nice! Lovely fuel. Don't have a shell anywhere near me or anywhere on my travels which is a shame, the only 2 fuels I have really close to me is an esso which the super is only 97RON and a tesco which is the biggest tesco in Europe so the petrol station is almost always a 15 minute wait lol. Apparently sainsburys super is meant to be pretty good and there's one near me too

Mine gets Tesco momentum or whatever they're calling it now unless I can't find a Tesco then it's Shell V-Power.

Tried 95Ron in it once or twice and it didn't feel as smooth as usual and got about 20miles less to the tank than with super.

It does seem to work well in mine, if I can't get to tesco.

And it's quite a few pence cheaper

yeah like you say, dunno if there is a small fault with the car, but even after a week it doesn't feel as smooth the idle seems a tiny bit lumpy. Wish I'd have thought about it at the time just instinct to pop the filler in and press it.

Also on another note, is the fuel sender a weird shape? I put £50 of normal unleaded in last week from nearly empty which put it just below full, drove about 80 miles fairly sensibly which probably used between 1/8th and 1/4 of a tank to the gauge, which i thought was reasonable.. so went to the fuel pump expecting to pay about £10.. it come to nearly £25, I thought the fuel tank was only 50 odd litres, how can filling up just over 1/4 of a tank therefore cost 25 quid?!

The fuel tank is tapered so as you get towards the bottom of the tank the gauge goes down a lot quicker although you are using fuel at the same rate. You should be able to do almost 100 miles of motorway driving on just the first 8th of the fuel indicator, but then it's obviously a bit of a shock when you come to fill up as thats about £15 worth!

Lol same as the cars I used to have, amazes people, wow 100 miles on 1/8th of a tank you can get 800 miles to a tank! 200 miles later and you are nearly empty.. think what it is, the really efficient fuel sits at the top of the tank on a separate level then after that has gone any old water can go into the engine B):giggle:
