Another MPG thread...(Yawn!)

Featured Replies

I've got the TSi with DSG and have just covered 1100-1200 miles on motorway and A roads travelling to, around and from Scotland after 1200 miles of of shortish journeys with a few longer runs during running in. The fuel consumption has improved from 38mpg at 75mph when running in to about 42mpg at the same speed on the start of my trip to scotland. Returning home with a total of 2000+ on the odo it was giving 43.5mpg. The engine is in its element on fast (quite hilly too) A roads returning mid 50's with some brisk smooth driving. On the motorway you are getting to speeds that the engine has to start working a bit harder and if you take it up to 80mph+ the fuel consumption increases dramatically. I suspect it will improve a little more over the next few thousand miles but it will never touch a diesel on economy.

After my last car, a 2.0 Octavia, I have a car that is quieter, outperforms it in real world driving despite the numbers being slightly in favour of the Octy, delivers a 50% improvement in consumption around town and A-roads and 30% on the motorway.

That's very interesting Fatbloke. Keep the figures coming as she beds in further. I think the TSI with a few thousand miles on the clock is going to prove one of the best petrols yet regarding fuel use! We need all you blokes with TSI's to keep posting what you are getting, and others with the older 1.2's and 1.4 petrols and diesels too. Don't forget you guys with the 1.9's, lets see some more of your figures if poss for comparison. It's surprisingly interesting and useful stuff and can influence what vehicles people buy.

Thanks for that, I`ll see if I can find the thread and tackle the dealer :dull: next week.....not holding me breath there though but thanks for the head up, well worth checking out

Well I done a wee trip to the inlaws at the weekend and the car returned a respectable 59.2MPG which I thought was good as my drive involved a motorway and the back roads of edinburgh all 30 limits, I'm really learning to drive this car for economy now and very pleased at what I'm getting.

Sounds like you are learning to drive it good! It's sometimes actually quite good fun trying different driving techniques to see how it affects the consumption. Then again, I'm a sad old git! As you get to know the car more and more you will see that figure of 59.2mpg going up I'll bet. Let us know when you get your first 70mpg run.

Cheers mate, yeah I'm driving the car at 30MPH in 3rd Gear 40MPH in 4th Gear and 50mph in 5th Gear and that seems to see the MPG go up and up, going over we managed 53MPG with the wife driving, but I'm looking to crack that magic 70MPG run.

I found 45mph in fourth hits 74mpg on a run on 'b' roads which are usually snarled up with traffic around my way so I'm not embarrassed to drive at that speed! And no, I don't mean I snarled up the traffic driving at those speeds. 55-60mph in fifth on a big run gives about 71mpg. If the revs in fifth are too low it works just a tad too hard and that knocks the consumption figure down a bit. It can be better to leave out fifth gear altogether unless going over 50-55mph I've found. But it depends on the roads you are travelling on and the rest of your driving style too I guess. One point, on motorways I still get very good mpg at 65-70mph in fifth on a good run...my best being 71.9mpg at those speeds. It's quite entertaining to see what she will do...but this probably only applies if you are sad like me!emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif

Nothing sad about withholding cash from the chancellors pockets..........every mpg saved is less money in his drinkies fund

I will hold my hands up to being a bit 'obsessed' with getting the best mpg. I have to drive an hour and a half every morning, same old boring route with nothing but Chris Moyles for company. The mpg challenge is a welcome distraction. I read the previous post about best gears for given speeds. Mine is a little different due to a lengthy gearbox. 30 mph is third. Fourth needs a minimum of around 47mph or it labours in the horrible 1600 rev range. This makes it a royal pain if the guy in front is doing 40 mph exactly. Fifth needs 60 or more or again it labours a bit and there is poor acceleration. Putting your foot down in that situation just wastes fuel and you go nowhere. If accelarating I always have the car around 2000 to 3000. I find that gentle pressure on the pedal using the higher revs is much more efficient that putting your foot down a bit in lower revs when its sluggish.

Dont ever take it out of gear, wastes fuel. If in gear over a certain speed it switches the fuel off when your not applying any power....but you knew that.

Biggest difference ever is to not accelerate up just to then brake for a junction. If you can drive without needing hardly any brakes thats the best you can do. All that braking is wasted energy which makes the chancellor happy. So you might be 5-10 minutes longer on your journey, big deal. Saves your tyres and brake pads as well. Dont get me wrong, I dont drive like an old fa.... 'elderly gentleman'. Engage your brain and lock away the testosterone, might save you a few quid.

Sitting at a junction or level crossing....big queue. Switch your engine off !! Just watch you average tick away as you sit in traffic if you engine is running. Modern cars do this anyway (which I hate as I want to decide when I do this)

But the biggest suggestion I can make is this (loud hailer standing on a large box) CHECK YOU TYRE PRESSURES !!! IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE TRUST ME"

As I said before my front tyres are at 38 psi. I can see a perfect wear pattern and it does reduce the rolling resistance. Road noise is higher yes....so turn up the stereo.

This is your fault Mr Estate man. I thought I was in control of my mpg habit. I can give it up any time I like....honest :S

Oh no...I hadn't looked at it that way before...that's going to make me even worse now...darn chancellor's not having anymore of my money!

Errrrr! I think I must be too!

If only I had one...

Quite agree...this is very important.

I've learned as I go through life most things are my fault, according to Mrs Estate Woman emoticon-0148-yes.gifIt's astonishing too, how many accidents I manage to miss. When I see them in my rear view mirror, the chaos behind me and all that, makes me glad I'm a good driver!!

Back to the inlaws again today and yet again the Fabia's MPG is climbing managed 60.6MPG now!! My route was the same route as before if I had not been caught up in roadworks and traffic lights and a little bit of right foot (within the speed limits) I would have had more, really loving driving this car.

On a downside through my worst MPG has been 39MPG with just stop start traffic in Edinburgh.

  • 4 weeks later...

Ive been running the tsi on a quite a few fillups of Tesco 99 ron fuel now and today finally got a decent drive in her for the first time in a few weeks. Now ive done this route a few times before and noticed approx 40-45 mpg (mix of town but mainly A country roads) but today the first time ive done it on 99 it averaged over 60 for the first time (62.3mpg). It was over a 45 mile trip and i tried my hardest to drive as i normally would (55-65mph). Now it could be down to a number of factors but i think dumping the cheapo morrisons fuel has helped a bit.

Good to hear...I rate Shell V power but going to fill up tomorrow and will try Tesco 99 as I`m going on a long run on Sunday
