Whistling turbo

Featured Replies

My turbo on my 07 diesel Scout has started to whistle more than they usually do recently. Even my 12 year old daughter asked when the Police car will catch us up!

It is not all that bad actually, just sounds more like my wife's Citroen 2.0HDi now.

Should I be panicking and doing something about it, like saving my pennies, or is it just a hole in the intake pipe or something?

Your advice would be most welcome.

Cheers.

From what I read on here start saving your pennies.

Not sure the whistling's a problem but if it starts to "squeal" now and again then you may have cause for concern. Mine was replaced at 14k for an intermittent "squeal"...the bill ? £1700 !!! What's more worrying is that I've just reached 26k and it seems to have started again. Are the turbo's on these things really that weak ? Apparently the variable vanes stick and cause the problem.

had my turbo, replaced under warranty a couple of weeks ago for 'police siren whistle' on my vrs, not sure what the actual problem was, they just replaced it, no quibbles, but it's a exspensive job, at least £1500 :S

Thanks for the replies, I shall go and see my friendly Skoda dealer I think. It is only 10 days out of warranty & just had a major service too.

If it sounds like this get saving as you will at some point need a new turbo

Sounds like there could potentially have been an oil supply problem the first time and they didn't fix the cause, just the symptom. (Just a guess mind)

Mine sounds nothing like that, just normal whistling you get when the turbo spins. Could be a change to synthetic oil, the Skoda mechanic says. The Police ones do it regularly & never suffer from problems, and this mechanics Octavia has been doing it for the last 400,000 miles!

Thanks for the audio by the way, very useful.

400,000 miles ? Jeez he gets about a bit !!!

Think I'll be popping mine back for a check just before the warranty expires.

Took my vRS into Simpsons Skoda, Preston, yesterday morning, for the "police siren" noise. By 10 o'clock I'd got a call saying the turbo needed replacement, and I've collected it today. Just thankful it was covered under warranty (out of warranty next month!!), as the invoice I signed was over £1100 excl VAT, and without labour...... Just taken car out again, and unless I've suddenly lost my hearing, there's no whistle whatsoever. The car's only done 43K, is this a common fault???

That is EXACTLY how mine sounded just before it went pop :o :o :o , I would seriously avoid any WOT action with that turbo, mine literally flew apart when I wellied it out of a turning. It even split in half! the compressor volute casing was rolling around in the under tray, the Skoda Assist man couldn't believe what he saw. It also wrecked the intercooler, most of the boost piping and the EGR valve. It was off the road for over 2 weeks. Thankfully it was all under warranty but the bill was approaching £3k from memory.

The replacement turbos are (i'm reliably told) recon units. I was quoted £1750 for one by a dealer after my second turbo started pi$$ing oil everywhere, it was a warranty replacement for turbo no.1 that oversped and flew apart thanks to sticky guide vanes. Turbo no.2 had done about 24,000 miles. Skoda weren't interested in any kind of goodwill for the donkey turbo they slung on my car so I walked away.

I replaced it with a TurboTechnics Hybrid and it's been good as gold for the last 28,000 miles or so, sounds good too. Turbo (minus exchange for my old donkey one) + indy fitting + variable service = £970 all in.
