Roo-mster in Australia

Featured Replies

It took me a while to stop procrastinating, but I bought a Roomster on the weekend -- and I feel pretty good about it.

Always liked them, but they were way overpriced in Australia. The good news; it seemed that almost no one else liked them! So, all the remaining Roomies in Oz ended up at the one dealer, on run-out. The bad news; that dealer was in North Sydney, I live in Melbourne and I was getting married that week, so the timing was b-a-d.

Long story short, I bought the second-last new Roomster in the land. Anthracite grey, blue-on-black seats, with 1600 petrol engine, 6-speed auto. I am not sure how the spec of the local cars compares with the UK model, but mine came with climate control aircon, fast glass, thick carpets, 'Roomster' floor mats and sill plates, 8-speaker stereo, anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, cruise, trip computer and 15-inch alloys. That makes it an SE, I guess. When I was picking up the car, the salesman also mentioned that this one had metallic paint and reversing sensors and the rubber divider in the rear -- as if he expected me to pay extra for them. I asked if he wanted them back ...

On the drive home to Melbourne, I noted that it felt a little sluggish until I had done about 400km, then it started to hum a little easier. Then, it was fine; drove beautifully, stable, plenty of room.

Oh yes, the price. The numbers do not really translate between the countries' currencies, but my Vroomster was discounted by more than 40 percent, and cost about the same as an entry-level Toyota Yaris. I know which I would rather have. My wife loves it even more than I do, so we look forward to plenty of happy miles.
