Need to polish after claying?

Featured Replies

Hi,

new to detailing. I have a four month old Yeti that I want to clay to clean up some light contamination on the paintwork prior to sealing.

Can I just seal the paintwork with FK1000 after washing, claying, washing again and drying the paintwork or, do I need to actually polish the car after claying before sealing with FK1000.

I am not sure if claying actually takes the shine from the paint / clearcote. Have a CYC ultra fine claybar and some Dodo Juice born slippy to use as a lubricant.

Hi del. When I clay mine I polish it always then seal it then Wax it. Ryan

Yup, I'd second the polish then seal advice

My regime is:

Clay

Polish

Glaze

Sealer

Wax

:)

Hi you don't NEED to polish after claying but do wash it over and then seal. If you do want to polish then you really need a DA or maybe use AG SRP and work small areas.

Hi,

thanks for all the responses. As it is a very fine clay and paintwork is so new I have decided to take a chance and miss out the polish stage and go straight to seal. (unless it looks bad after claying)

May regret it later and have to polish but I am just looking for clean smooth paintwork that is sealed against the elements. I do not intend to add wax, just a couple of coats of FK1000.

I clay mine about 3 times a year to remove contaminants and then apply a sealant (Jetseal). I haven't polished it for about 18 months as it hasn't reallyt needed it - though I'll be getting the rotary out in a week or 2.

If you have a good wash/dry regime then you shouldn't need to polish for a while - providing the dealer hasn't inflicted some marring prior to delivery.

I use zymol cleaner wax after claying. Best of both worlds if you dont have time to do a full detail.
