Road Angel or PDA with Sat Nav and POI....

Featured Replies

Try this one

As i'm fairly new to this can someone please explain what CheckPOInt is? From what I gather does it just allow you to have an audible warning when you approach a POI?

Is it just for the TomTom Navigator software?

Tomtom Go already has this feature

Checkpoint is a bit of software that you need on the Pocket PC platform to give you the poi functionality. You don't need it on the Palm version of TomTom, or the TomTom Go, because that uses the Palm OS underneath.

Have finally decided(i think!!!)to go for a iPaq 3715 with Tom Tom Go+Speed Camera locations with a Tom Tom Car Kit and a 512mb SD card all for

Hi Wrighty

The fleet press have been reporting that all radar detectors will be illegal again soon so buying one may not be a good idea now especially as there has been no word yet about the penalties and how the new law will be enforced! the french are very anti with heavy fines' date='destruction of equipment and worse  It was initially reported that GPS based systems were to remain legal but later news has denied it...time will tell

The new laws will ban radar- and laser-sensing camera detectors. GPS-based systems will remain legal because as pointed out on here, the speed cameras are listed as POIs, so banning them would mean that you'd have to ban satnav, and that ain't going to happen. It's the same kind of logic as banning hand-held mobile phones, but allowing hand-held CBs. If they banned hand-held CBs, the emergency services wouldn't be able to talk to each other on the move! Fudge-tastic ;)

I can get you 1gb mem card for less than what they want for it' date=' and the rest of the package seems well overpriced, but most of that is down to the cost of the PDA.[/quote']

Well Jeff if you can get me a 1GB mem card for less can you get me one then please?

and yep i see what your saying about the cost but that is mainly because of the price of the PDA but i want a few specific features like wireless etc.

not bothered about the camera feature though.

your making me think twice now!!!!

Since Im planning a new job with lots more driving to different places involved, im after satnav...

I reckon a PDA/pocketPC plus satnav is the best option.

Basically i want a good to use SAT NAV software, and easy synchronisation with my home PC, as I could use the PDA as my diary too.

Is there a package that gives you a live speed readout, the speed limit of the road you are on and a warning of fixed speed camera locations?

Is it unfeasable to get one with a radar/laser detecton in addition?

Just trying to hijack any research people with similar requirements have already done.

Personally, and I did this. I'd get a Road Angel II, Tom Tom Go plus a PDA if you need one for other stuff other than Sat Nav.

I have a HP iPAQ 4150 which is used for Calendar, Excel, Wireless Internet etc and I had this before the Road Angel or Tom Tom Go. Then go a Road Angel original before upgrading to the new version which has a far better and easier to read display. This get's used as my speedo everytime I'm in the Car. Then I use the TTG whenever I need Sat Nav, which is about 25% of the time I'm in my car.

Didn't use the iPAQ as I couldn't be bothered with the Mounting Kits,Cables, GPS Receiver, Batteries, power leads etc, just want something that I could plug in and go.

well that is a good way to go about it if you've got 1000 quid sitting around burning a hole in your pocket!!!!

i personally don't want to spend that sort of money as good as it maybe.

the 1Gb cards are from a power seller on Ebay, about

well have been out off the 3715 due reading reviews of it locking up alot so have been looking at the 3417 but can't find any reviews on it anywhere.

i have been thinking though that i've had Toshiba Laptops for a good few years now and have never had any problems so am looking at them now, keep on going back to the Dell X30 as that seems to get ok write ups.

and as Jeff has said only get on it what i really need so only really need Wi-Fi so thats might make it easier.

Jono you could get a PDA with Wi-Fi and if you go to hot spots or find an unsecured wireless network you can access your email while out and about, cheaper than using Bluetooth and your mobile.

but as you say the Mio 168 is a good package.

This is my understanding, too. Nothing to stop known safety  camera van locations being included as POIs then?? Think these locations have to be 'approved', meaning Plod can't just park up anywhere and snoop away. Round here the comimg weeks locations are published in the local rag, but not the but not the times so checking exact locations is a bit hit and miss.

On the Pocket GPS POI centre http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/tomtompoi.php

popular remote camera locations are included, along with ones set up at roadworks. It is updated every other week.
