Road Angel or PDA with Sat Nav and POI....

Featured Replies

so what would everyone on here recommend, got some christmas/birthday money starting to burn a hole in my pocket and not sure which i should go for.

like the idea of Road Angel type product as its just for one task but also like the idea of having Pocket PC running Sat Nav software with cameras as POI.

as i can use it and take it anyware and use in conjunction with my laptop.

so recommendations much appreciated everyone.

IPAQ / TomTom / CheckPOInt works for me :)

I have a Road Angel II that gets used on every trip I make in the Car. Plus I also have a Tom Tom Go for Sat Nav with the Camera POI on which gets used when making specific journies or places I have not been to, but doesn't get used everyday.

I also have a HP iPAQ 4150 which I have had since launch, and was debating going for the Tom Tom S/W on that but by the time you have added a mounting kit, Bluetooth GPS Receiver, powered speaker as I understand the sound from the standard iPAQ speaker isn't brilliant, associated wires plus connecting and disconnecting it evertime you are in and out of the car, I couldn't be bothered. So went the dedicated unit routes.

Get both :)

You could have BOTH, some of those dedicated units have NMEA satellite-out to a PDA/Laptop connection (you'd have to investigate which model/cables). Basically, the Road Angel etc would replace the GPS antenna for the PDA, then the PDA would be a navigation/camera unit only ;).

Personally, I'm using a Fujitsu Loox 610 (400Mhz, Windows Mobile 2003), with Tomtom 3, and a Sysonchip CF PlusII memory (it's a CF slot GPS with 256mb Ram, very sensitive, worked last night in the storms!!!) and Checkpoint.

The speed camera database for checkpoint seems very complete, and updates are free.

Bare in mind that Radar-based speed camera detection units are being outlawed all over Europe (including the UK, soon).

hi wrigty ,

i just posted a new thread in this forum i think can help you out .

the newer road angels are now on sale and are pretty good but dedicated gps not for me !!.check my post .there is another sysytem called traffcam that works on the same platform (cell fone ) as well that you can use as the road angel but it does not tell you live just the locations of fixed cams

Hi Wrighty

The fleet press have been reporting that all radar detectors will be illegal again soon so buying one may not be a good idea now especially as there has been no word yet about the penalties and how the new law will be enforced! the french are very anti with heavy fines, destruction of equipment and worse  It was initially reported that GPS based systems were to remain legal but later news has denied it...time will tell

A safer bet now would appear to be to go for a pda based sat nav with camera overlays/waypoints but that would not cover you against mobiles.A cheap laser/radar detector will pick up these but TBH i've found that especially with mobile Laser, by the time you get the alert, its often too late to reduce speed enough anyway

:(

I would think that when the new law comes in there will be a load of new products that are less blatent than the current road angels etc  -something with remote detectors hidden and a small warning unit

For those who mention Checkpoint, are you using their speed camera database? I use Checkpoint but with with www.pocketgps.co.uk 's database. Its not all that it could be imo, have you guys experience that Checkpoint is better?

I use checkpoint with the database provided by checkpoint (poiplace). Updates are free, and it synchronises at the press of a button (both ways). They also have other databases for other things to like McDonalds, Burger King and KFC, hotel chains and so on.

This database is maintaned by checkpoint users, with additions being constantly added and old cameras removed.

Thanks for all the responces so far everyone, from what i can gather for my needs i would be best to get a Pocket PC and run a Sat Nav package with POI on it,Checkpoint or Tom Tom Go.

does this sound right?

so what Pocket PC/PDA do i go for then?

have been reading up but get lost pretty quick as i'm not that up on the Technical jargon so what makes/models can you recommend and where to purchase from online or from normal retailers?

thanks again.

I have recently bought a Tomtom Go - seems like an excellent bit of kit so far. I've installed the speed camera databases and it seems to work fine.

As i'm fairly new to this can someone please explain what CheckPOInt is? From what I gather does it just allow you to have an audible warning when you approach a POI?

Is it just for the TomTom Navigator software?

Tomtom Go already has this feature

have just read that it isn't compatible with Tom Tom Go II Euro/USA maps.

Am still looking for the right product to get i have to admit,

have decided that i require my PDA to have WI-FI built in and would like the TT3 Navigator with full UK and Europe road maps and a Arkon cradle as it has the option for running a second USB to run a wired GPS reciever.

have come accross 2 modals so far, both from iPAQ and mainly because they are attached to GPS PDA Packages

iPAQ 3417

iPAQ 3715(Which dosne't get very good write ups,3417 fairs better)

i know the 1710/2210/1940 all come in good packages and but do not have WI-FI.

please help, can't take anymore of this trailing through the countless websites t'internet.

so what are your opinions?

does anyone here have/used either of these 2 units or have other reccommendations that will satisfy PDA/Sat Nav blues.

Have you looked at Dell Alex. I have not had any problems with it that have not been my fault.

The kit it comes with is all original tomtom but i'm not sure if the holder is the same wether it is the wired version as the bluetooth version.

Tomtom 3 come with major roads of Europe as part of the package, if you want all the roads so you can go between obscure french towns and know the lay of the back roads ( :D) that would need the extra maps of western europe CD's which will set you back about

have had an original road angel fitted now for over 12 months and in that time the only lucky stars received courtesy of her majesties finest were while driving a hire car (road angel absent) even had the thing hard wired by the very friendly chap who fitted my hands free phone kit. the advantage of the old road angel is that its

Don't, I'm sorely tempted to have it done myself, but I'll have to wait 'till my car is fixed.

WrightyRS:

I prefer Tomtom Go because it is less hassle to use, and is more stable than the PDA-based navigation. However, if you use a PDA, it's worth getting one with Bluetooth. This will then allow you to connect to Tomtom Traffic, for live traffic updates, via a Bluetooth telephone.

It's all very clever...
