New(ish) Oct. Elegance Estate - couple of questions (maxidot, mp3)

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

Well, we finally ordered a facelfit Octavia. I was keen on a Scout, but finances (and the lack of second hand models!) made it unfeasible. However, I did manage to convince the wife out of a Rav4 (as we're after a 4x4 in due course, she's provisionally agredd we'd pick up a yeti in a year or two) and we've got a 6 month old Octavia Elegance Estate (2.0 TDI PD, Arctic Green) ordered, to pick up next Friday

I was very impressed on the test drive, plus the model has folding mirrors and the spare wheel (the dealer seemed to have plenty of models with the same spec).

My only query was regarding the onboard computer. From looking at the relevant thread it looks like we don't have the maxi-dot option, which I was keen on. Strangely, when I was on the test drive I asked the saleman about it (specifically referring to 'maxi dot') and he seemed unclear on it himself, just referring to the standard trip computer!? This had the usual stuff plus he demonstrated a little tone when you exceeded a specific speed, but don't think it had any other features.

Did like the feel of the car, the standard of the interior and the great displays on the Bolero ;)

I had one nerdy query about the aux socket between the front seats. I play plenty of mp3's direct from a usd drive - I assume it's easy enough to get an adapter so I can just plug this in and play??

The AUX plug is for connecting an MP3 player via the headphone socket of the player. I do not know of a usb to 3.5mm plug converter (although I could be wrong). If you do not have an MP3 player the easiest thing to do is get an SD card and use the SD card reader in the Bolero head unit.

Thanks for replying.

I've got an mp3 player, but I end up swapping albums so much I find it's easier having a usb stick for the car (my current car has a usb socket on the stereo).

I just noticed that the octavia catalogue/brochure has a USB adaptor for £20, which is says is 'for use with Mobilde Device Interface' :wonder:

If the sd card reader's on the main panel I may just grab one of these and use instead of the usb as suggested though B)

The trip computer on the facelift Octavia is pretty good and looks similar to the Maxidot. The easiest way to tell is to open a door and see if you get a picture of the car with the open door on the display. Most of the options that can be set on the Maxidot can be set using a VCDS lead and some people have had a Maxidot retrofitted.

The 'Mobile Device Interface' (aka MDI) is an optional extra that adds a rectangular connector in the glovebox that you can plug an iPod or USB device. If you don't have an iPod then you are better off sticking an SD card in the Bolero.
