RON Rating in new VRS

Featured Replies

I've been for a test drive and I love the new VRS. Great fun to drive, will blow most things out of the way but also happy to just potter around if your in a can't be arsed sort of mood. The only downside is the price. I'm trying to find ways of justifying that sort of outlay for a fabia (and trying to come up with ways of finding the money too  ).

I've been reading lots of posts on here and in various other sources and one thing that concerns me is that that inside the fuel cap it says 98/95 RON? Does this mean it needs to be filled with uber expensive Super Unleaded and can only use Regular Unleaded in extreme cases i.e. when you can't get Super, or can you use either? Why does it have both?

If it can only be run on Super Unleaded then I think it'll be too expensive to run for me :(

Ordinary petrol in the UK is generally 95 RON, and super is 98-99 RON. So you ought to be fine on regular fuel...

I only use 95 Ron, unless your always using full power then 98 Ron is just wasting money in my view. You only need 98 if you want full performance, mine as plenty power with 95. If it was proven that 98 would prolong the Health of the engine then that would be a different story.

ISTR the 180+bhp old 1.8Ts had to be run on 98/99 RON to get all the horsepowers out, and the 1.6 TSIs used to coke-up if you didn't use it. But if the filler says you can use 95RON, you should be fine like I say...

I did hear about the "coke-up" issue on older tsi engine's, if some one for sure knows that using 98 is better for more then just a bit of extra horsepower I would like to know!

Would hate to think I was slowly damaging the engine.

Yeah my sentiments exactly! I'd like to find out for sure before I take the plunge, I'd hate to be stuck in a finance deal for a car with a duff engine that the warranty won't fix 'cos I'd used the wrong fuel :o

I'd like to think that as it has both on the cap then it must be possible to run it on either without damaging anything. Also when the old diesels used to carbon up all we did was give them a good thrashing to clear them out, would the new 1.4TSI not react in a similar way?

How are you finding you new VRS Jammydodger?

I run mine on super (normally about 97 around here, Total and Texaco most common) FSi engines do prefer the higher octane fuel, also note power figures are quoted using 98ron fuel. So if you run 95 there is a slight drop, I do notice the difference but its not instant, need a few tanks.

If it says 98/95 inside the cap, then I would read that as either could be used without issue. However, if you wanted to run it mainly on 95, I would run a tank of 98 through it regularly, perhaps every 3rd fill. As said, the engine will only give full power with 98. (even slightly reduced power will be bloody quick!)

The Swift Sport I had had "98 RON fuel" on the filler cap, and owners that ran them on 95 soon noticed less power, pinking and rough running after a few tankfulls. The SSS could get away with a tank of 95, but you couldn't run them on it all the time. The vRS would seem to be far more tolerant.
