Head gasket question

Featured Replies

hey all

Probably been asked before but i couldnt find anything in search. Anyhow, i need to get my timing belt changed soon along with the water pump so was just wondering if the head gasket can follow with it? i asked a garage and they said its not worth it but just wonder what peoples ideas are?

Also, what head gasket does an ASZ engine use?ive seen about 3 different gaskets :wonder:

Thanks guys

Unless its gone/going or you feel the head needs to come off for any reason then leave it alone.

It is another costly job that should only really be messed with when nessassary. :smirk:

Cambelt/Waterpump = 60,000 miles or every 4 yrs which ever is sooner.

aah ok then, il leave it  yup cambelts deffinatly due, coming upto 60k and 5 years old...better star saving up :giggle:

FYI, I recently feared I had HG trouble on my ASZ-engined vRS but it turned out to be a fault in the expansion tank cap preventing the pressure equalising when the engine cooled down. Whilst speaking to various people to try and determine whether I really DID have a problem, one of the guys at a particular VAG specialist mentioned that in the five years he'd been there, the only time he'd seen a VAG diesel with a blown HG was when the owner topped up with screenwash instead of coolant!

It sounds as though you were asking about a pre-emptive change like you have to do with the timing belt, but if you have any doubt, follow this guide:

(Hope your eyes don't hurt from it ALL BEING TYPED IN CAPITAL LETTERS! It's good advice otherwise!)

HTH

No need for a new head gasket, they don't leak, ever. Never heard of one letting go on a VRS. Cam belt and water pump definitly worth doing together though. and maybe the aux belt and tensioner if they show signs of wear or noise.

I agree with the others - if it aint broke, don't fix it.

I think the various head gaskets are different thicknesses - something to do with the piston to head clearance to set the squish band.
