Auto Windscreens incompetance

Featured Replies

I have to say i had my Windscreen in my vRS replaced after a nut off the back of a lorry hit the bonnet and windscreen producing a nice dent in the bonnet and a 2 foot crack in the screen.

This was about 3 weeks after having it replaced previously (again by AW as they are my insurers preferred) due to a stone chip which produced yet another crack.

The first time to my un-trained eye the job looked to be fine. However when the guy cam out to the second one he found part of the slicing tool stuck in the sealant :o He asked who had replaced it before and i told him it was AW and he was gobsmacked. He apologised for the last muppet and said he would report it when he got back.

To be fair to them the second guy i had was fantastic. He put extra sealant on at my request and even re-positioned the screen for me as to me it looked like it was not quite right. He was only too happy to help and did an outstanding job.

This was probably something to do with the fact i was stood watching him. I also made him a cuppa which i find often helps make people more amicable towards you.

But that job is absolutley shocking and i personally would give up now as you have given them ample opportunity to sort it - or at least inform you how and when they are going to - and i would now be taking the matter up with a solicitor.

I hope you get it sorted mate.

Though not related to cars or glass, about 3 years ago I found a good way to stick it to big companies who, being faceless, think they can ignore the little customer. I booked a BA air ticket through E-Bookers, for the wife, and they got the forename wrong.

I thought they could simply change this if pointed out, but oh no, tough luck mate - she would not be allowed to board (because obviously her name was different on her passport) and there would be no refund etc. etc.

BA said they could do nothing either, as it wasn't booked through their own web site. As you can imagine I went ballistic and wrote to my MP, BA's head man and the local newspaper (who came down and took photos and splashed the story far and wide.)

After a bit of phoning back and forth (to India of course) E-Bookers held up their hand and made a full ex-gratia repayment AND Nectar Points (who had been involved in the purchase) re-credited all the points to us.

The point is, they did not like the publicity, the MP involvement (her office were great), and the threat of further repercussions. If it proves necessary, give it a try.

p.s. why not send a link to this thread to their managing director?

ok good news had the auto windscreens chap from my local depot he has spoken to head office and they have admitted full liability in writing , and have agreed for all work to be carried out by the main dealer, just need to get them a quote for it to be authorised. Again as i usually do i will sing the praises of Sinclair Skoda who upon hearing of the damage when this first happened were more than happy to examine the butchery and advise on the best path to take. Here's hoping there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Excellent result

Glad it is all getting sorted. Being in the same area as you I hope my windscreen does not get damaged now as I do not want to take the chance that I have the same muppet fitter as you!!!!!

I have learnt my lesson, insist its Autoglass not Auto Windscreens, take it to the depot, try to insist on an original part and watch the guy like a hawk, take your time inspecting the car before and after in great detail, do not be pressured by the guy who wants to go onto his next job, take your digital camera and refuse to sign the job off if you arent happy!

This is great news. I have to say, I have been in a similar situation to you, although, my local Skoda dealer were the ones that messed my 2004 brand new Fabia estate up when they fitted roof rails. They actually looked a mess AND I had a drill scratch above one of the rear doors.

Although I got it all sorted eventually (because the roof rails hadn't been fitted correctly, I even had rain water enter the roof and make a mess of the lining too - I wish I had taken photos of it all), the thought of my bfrand new car being screwed up left a bitter taste.

I wanted to post that when I first read about your problems, but didn't want to make you feel worse. Just hope you get it all sorted to how it should be.

Glad it's all been sorted. Did 'Auto Windscreens' used to be RAC Auto Windscreens before RAC sold it off and most/all of the depots got closed leaving just the mobiles? If so I used to work for them (front of house/accounts in a depot, not fitting), and out of around 10 fitters 9 were great and I'd have trusted them fully to do a good job, but one young (mobile) guy was just a complete idiot and made mistakes all over the place (we had quite a few complaints about him), so I guess with any company you can never tell if you are going to end up with (on the whole my impression was that the better/more experienced fitters were in the depots as this was seen as a better job (tea breaks etc) than being on the road all day, but I guess if your insurance company only uses a company that has mobile fitters then its more pot luck...

I understand your anger! My car is 2 months old & I can only imagine !!

Thanks for the heads up re which company to avoid!

Really hope all is sorted soon!

Dunc.

Be aware that you Skoda dealer are unlikely to fit the windscreen themselves - they will sub that part of the job out to a mobile windscreen fitter (possibly Autoglass or Auto Windscreens!). Fitting bonded glass is a fairly specialised job, and infrequently done by main dealers, so its not worth them training a guy up and having the specialised tools to hand. If they have a proper bodyshop then they may do it themselves, but most dealers are subbing out body repairs these days as well.

ok just to update had the first quote in from the dealers 460 so far, still waiting on the quote from their bodyshop to fix the other marks caused by the caveman, i dont think this is going to be cheap.

It might be a coincidence, but I had my windscreen replaced last week, and the first time the guy comes out with the wrong glass. It's got the correct Skoda part number and all, but the the ceramic square for the Auto wipers/lights is about 2 inches too low...No real problem, other than having the guy return a couple of days later with the correct glass.

Waplord, it makes me wonder if your repair man has also arrived with the wrong screen, but fitted it anyway? I mean it was clearly the wrong screen for your car, but did it have the correct part number?

  • Author

yes its been confirmed by the dealer its the wrong screen for my car but the issue is the monkey who came to fit it decided to stretch the wiring down and damage my auto mirror in the process also marking the cars paint by being not careful what he was doing

I went through this a couple of years ago but with Autoglass. Read about it here... http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/99514-autoglass-jpwned-my-car/

Cost them over a grand in Audi Bodyshop and courtesy car rental to put right. Fair play though, they were good about sorting it out.

I've always sworn by Autoglass...

Autoglass did OK on my Leon. Auto Windscreens managed to get sealant on the Lupo's pale yellow seats....

I still think we should send this thread to "News of the World" !! (but don't say I said so!)

I'm currently waiting for autoglass to come and replace my windscreen for a second time. I had a chip in the lower offside corner of the windscreen in the field of vision which didn't take a repair. they replaced the windscreen which when fitted they realised was the wrong part. The boss for the rain sensor was 2" too low (as many of you are finding out).

This was however noted on the job sheet, however its taken them nearly 8 weeks to get a replacement windscreen. unfortunately they were due between 0930 and 1100.

In all fairness to them though I have always had a good experience with Autoglass when having repairs/replacements. My first repair lasted about 3 weeks and when checked at one of their car park based repairers they were able to book me in for replacement over the phone instantly

Glad to hear it all went well for you, trust me when all this is put right i wont ever be letting auto windscreens near anything of mine ever again.

I became the statistic that means you sign a disclaimer with Autoglass saying that 0.1% of the time, a repair to the screen may cause it to crack. Mine wasn't an MOT fail but decided to take advantage of a free repair. £70 excess later I had a new screen. Decided that, in the future, if it passes an MOT, the chip will stay.

jesus this gets worse, the car stuff is in hand but they appear to have registered on here as Auto_Windscreens added me as a friend to see my profile then deleted me!! i do not appreciate this bunch of cowboys stalking me on the net and it hardly enhances the reputation of the company here which i dare say is shoddy already!

I had a chip and it also failed to repair and cracked.

As the guy said to me at the time, if it doesn't crack during a repair, it probably wasn't going to crack any time soon anyway.

Obviously water getting in and freezing or hot water on a frozen screen changes that.

The chip was fairly substantial in my case, so it was worth a punt before going for a replacement screen.

If you didn't accept them as a friend, they can't see anything you didn't make public :)
