leaking fuel filter? and which engine oil?

Featured Replies

Hi, i'm new here and was hoping for a bit of advice.

I have a 2007 Octavia 1.9tdi and have a bit of a leak. Its coming from around the fuel filter area, there are no obvious signs of where its coming from but there is a spray all over that area on the underside of the bonnet. I've had it into the garage 4 time snow and they have no idea but did replace the fuel filter thinking it may have perished. Once its cleaned off i can drive 50miles and there will only be a very slight bit fuel under the bonnet indicating its coming out in a thin upward mist. However before that i hadn't looked in about two months and it was a real mess. Any ideas?

The second question relates to engine oil. the manual recommends VW 506 01 or 507 00. looking at the below website indicates i should be using Shell Helix Ultra VX 5w 30. I'm having trouble getting hold of this. if i was to use oil like Helix Ultra E 5w-30 is that likely to cause a problem?

Your help with the above is much appreciated. As you probably guessed my knowledge on cars is a bit (very) limited.

The specification of the oil is more important than the make etc. VW507.00 is a must for car fitted with diesel particle filter and / or variable servicing as it is a low ash long life oil. If your car is on fixed time/distance servicing the the VW505.01 will be perfectly adequate. I had 505.01 oil in my old Fabia vRS (130bhp 1.9 TDI PD) and had it put into my current car as I had it changed to fixed servicing. I'd go into your local dealer to get advice if not sure, otherwise like Mike said pop into Halfords and check up in the little reference card they usually have hanging around the place. The correct specification which will be shown in the small print on the back of the bottle is the most important thing rather than the name on the front.

As to the fuel leak, are you sure it is the filter that is leaking? By all means go and check that the filter is not leaking and the seal is in place, but if it was a leak from there I would also suspect that there will be signs of fuel stains around the filter body where the leak originates from. The symptoms you describe could also be associated with one of the fuel pipes having a very tiny pin hole in it so as the fuel is pumped under pressure around the system it will be forced out of the hole as a fine mist, where the pipes attach to the top of the filter body could also be a possible source of leakage.

You can buy VW spec oil from ASDA, Mobil 1 ESP 5w/30 504.00[petrol] 507.00[diesel] for £32.00[5ltr] or £8.50[1ltr].

Thanks for the replies guys.

I picked up the halfords oil today, thanks for that. Spent flipping ages at various filling station shops that were on my route trying to get the right one.

In terms of the leak, there is absolutely no evidence (that i can see) anywhere around the fuel filter body. its all on the underside of the bonnet. I just booked the car into today to have it looked at by another garage next week. i'll keep you updated.
