Winter tyres

Featured Replies

It looks more and more like I'm going to be getting a new Fabia vRS thereby changing from AWD to 2WD and, following the 4 weeks of snow covered roads that we had here in parts of Lancashire last winter, I wondered if anyone could answer a few questions?

If I want to fit winter tyres has anyone any experience of tyres that are good?

I'm thinking I'll need smaller wheels to allow for the thicker sidewall which winter tyres would have so, if anyone can pont me in the right direction for wheels I'd be grateful. I only want some basic steelies as they'll just sit in the shed with the winter tyres on for a large portion of the year.

Thanks in advance.

winter tyres will more than make up for not having 4WD, at anything below 5 celcius they work better than summer tyres, and you should be able to get them in OE size... dunno what the new fabia vRS is, but I can get em in the punto in 205/45/17..... just use a tyre size calculator if you want narrower ;)

Hi,

ran Nokian WR G2 on my Yeti last winter and I found them to be excellent.

Just looking at the handbook and that suggests 185/55 R15 H are the recommended winter tyre size on 6J x 15 H2 ET43 rims, although on a vRS that sounds a bit 'weedy' :wonder:

Thanks for the replies.

Anyone any ideas on wheels that are the right offset and stud pattern, preferably 16" to help offset the increased rolling radius of the winter tyres?

Hi again,

the Elegance spec runs on 6.5J x 16 H2 ET 43 with 205/45 tyres and I belive the stud pattern etc. is 5 x 100.00 x 57.00

I think the OEM size for the new Furby vRS is 205/40 17. Looking at Mytyres there are only 2 very expensive winter tyres you can get in that size. Pirellis @ £158 and Bridgetones @ £134 each. Camskill do not stock that size winter tyres.

I imagine you best bet is to buy some wheels from a Mk1 vRS, and put 205/45 16 tyres on.

If behaviour in snow is of concern, I think you will be better off with the VRS DSG than the standard DSG box because of sport mode. See here http://www.autocar.co.uk/forums/t/13502.aspx?PageIndex=3

Once again thanks for the replies everyone, I've plenty more to think about now :S

Winter tire size 205/50/16 will not fit. The rear tires hit the inner fender at full load. :'(
