Radio power source dead...

Featured Replies

The radio in this Fabia had to be turned on and off manually, and it was dangling out of the dash (Sony replacement unit as the knobs on the original had fallen off!).

I pulled it out and realised that he'd wired it up wrongly and had both the 12v and acc lines going in to the perm 12v line. When I connected the ACC line up correctly it didn't turn on with the ignition nor manually!

I checked the fuse on the side of the dash and its fine, they all are...

I'm thinking he shorted the acc line out as he didn't have any insulation on the bullet connectors he had used. Is there another fuse in the car for this or is it going to require a new line feed to it?

Thanks, James.

Any fuses in the stereo itself? Blade fuses on the rear of the unit or inline

in the power wire?

Also, although I realise theses are obvious points to an experienced stereo fitter

but still worth checking to rule them out...

Have you tried reversing the yellow and red wires on the stereos own loom

even if it is connected correctly at the moment. It shouldn't do any harm for a quick test. .

You may find it works when they are reversed. Ive seen that before

and Sony's usually do need switching around with VAG cars.

Or maybe the earth connection for the Stereo has somehow been disturbed breaking the connection

somewhere along the line? Especially if the stereo was flapping about and hanging out of the dash.

This would also cause no power even if the power connections are ok.

Finally, the Fabia uses the canbus system, if all else failed, I'd probably try disconnecting the battery

for about 15mins and then reconnecting it. This causes the cars electrical systems to "reset"

and again you may find this cures it. I'm far from an expert about the whole canbus thing

but I've heard it can do funny things to the electrics if it gets confused.

If all else fails there is a forum on here for questions of this nature and lots of much cleverer

blokes than me check in there regularly and answer problems like this....

The stereo itself works fine when a 12v feed is provided where it needs to be, so it boils down to the OEM wiring, fuses and whatever else in the middle... Will try the battery trick in the morning :)
