Cheap Mobil 1 ESP oil

Featured Replies

Don't know if it's already been reported on here, but Asda is knocking out Mobil 1 ESP engine oil at £32 for 5 litres! That seems remarkable cheap to me - it meets all the VW specs from 507.00 downwards. Picked one up in the weekly shop - would have been rude not to.

Cheers,

Bob

Sounds a good deal - useful to note the batch info on the neck of the container - should have a 'use by' date too. Just interested to see if it's been sitting around for a while, hence the attractive price?

How many litres do you need for an oil change and is it easy to get to the oil filter? I've always fancied doing it myself but never got round to it yet...if its easy I wouldn't mind saving some money!!

Depends on the engine - mine's a 2.0 litre CR TDI so takes 4.2 litres. The technical section in the back of your owners manual will tell you the oil capacity for your particular engine, but a 5 litre can will will be enough for all engines with some left for top ups.

The filters are the replacement paper type, best obtained from the main dealers - they're not very expensive. Mine's on variable servicing so will only see the dealership every 19000 miles or so, which is way too long between oil changes in my opinion, even with long life oil, therefore I will be doing my own intermediate oil changes at half of that.

Cheers,

Bob.

Sorry just realised I misread your question. Yes the oil filter is easy to get at - it's on the right hand side at the front of the engine - spin off plastic canister type.

Thanks, what tools do I need to get the filter off? I was thinking of getting a pela pump to get the old oil out and save mucking about with sump plugs

Use a socket, do not try to get the filter off with a spanner!

I would recommend you always drain the oil from the sump plug and let gravity do it's job in flushing out the crap that will have built up in the bottom of the sump. If you suck the old oil out the top as some dealers tend to do for convenience the sediment tends to get left in and can build up over time - won't do the engine any good at all.

You should be able to get the special socket that fits the plastic oil filter housing from Halfords or any other good motor factors - worth getting the proper tool as it's easy to chew up the top of the housing if you don't use the right sized socket.

Bob
