SD Card Bolero Radio - HELP PLEASE!

Featured Replies

Hello! I want to play all my music in my little yeti via a SD card rather than an ipod etc. Can someone please tell me (in plain and simple no fuss english) exactly which make, size, model etc I need to buy for great sound quality etc? THANKS!

A 16gb or 32gb Sandisk SDHC from Amazon or a trusted Ebayer should fit the bill and give room for adding as much music as you will ever want.

Thankyou! Do you know what file type the songs need to be? Is it AAC, WMV or MP3?

Any major make SDHC card, with a decent class rating, so it's quick to transfer music onto, as well as when browsing it via the Bolero.

Sandisk/Kingston/PNC/Transend have all been used by me on a Bolero without problem. I would go for at least a Class-6 personally.

Have a look at MyMemory. They have Transend Class-10s at the moment for £13 in 8Gb or £22 in 16Gb. Should give you enough capacity! If not they're available upto 32Gb at the moment.

I've only ever used MP3s (why use anything else? :))

But I believe the Bolero will read at least WMV too. Not sure about AAC. Try one - and if it doesn't, convert it

hmmm... I'm quite sure I want to say WMA (Windows Media Audio) instead of WMV (Windows Media Video)...

If you want to use also AAC, OGG-Vorbis with MP3 and WMA files you need a MDI Connection Port in your car.

WMV are very big files for worse sound quality than mp3.

Unless you intend to upgrade the speakers and listen when with the engine off, it is not worth encoding higher than 128kbps, road noise will mask a lot of the subtle differences in sound quality.

I use mp3PRO, which allows me to use 98kbps with no noticeable difference in sound quality over 192kbps.

Neither the Bolero or Columbus support AAC directly via the SD card. Stick with MP3 or unprotected WMA and you will be fine.

MP3Pro is also unsupported in both headunits, so whilst your track will play it will have a poor sound quality on the headunit. I tried MP3pro for a while, but the lack of support (since to encode/decode it you need to buy the codec license) is a real show stopper for me.

Even in the car, I can tell the difference between a 320kbps MP3 and a 192 kpbs one.

You dont need mp3Pro support to play back, only to encode.

And there are cough/free/cough offerings out there.

I've only got a 2gig SD card, with WMA files on it, and with 6 CD's downloaded it still isn't a quarter full, so anything bigger than 8gig should be fine. I suppose it just depends how you want to use it. I'm quite happy wiping and reloading stuff.

I'm inherently lazy so, to save me trawling through the Bolero manual I've downloaded in anticipation of my Yeti's arrival early next month, can someone tell me if I can organise MP3s into folders on my SDHC card (say by artist) and if I do will the Bolero display said folders and allow me to open them to play songs within? Or do I have to just keep adding stuff as individual tracks?

Don't know, I'm a Luddite!!

I stick 6 CD's onto the card, push it into the hole, and it then plays track 1 from all 6, then track 2, etc.

Cheers Graham that's a big help :wonder:

Just save them in Mp3 format and then drag and drop the albums onto your card. The Bolero will then display each album as you have saved it. It does not merge all of the songs together, or artists and alphabetise them in a very annoying way. It is a very simple and user friendly system.

Be careful as there is often a limit on how many files these players will accept, you can reach the limit long before filling the card if you go for the larger cards.

BTW 32Gb is the largest SDHC card, after that it becomes the new SDXC cards, which I strongly doubt will be backwardly compatible.

Agreed - and my Yeti is an early car presumably without the latest Bolero software.

Having just read this yesterday I downloaded this ripping software for free Ripper and ripped all my iPOD music to MP3 overnight. You can tick a box that keeps all the songs in albums. Does it all automatically. Copied to a 4GB card and it works a treat. Might not be as good as ripping all my CDs directly to MP3 but life is too short....

Only have to get the towbar on and life will be (mostly) complete. B)
