burning oil?

Featured Replies

Our 1.2 is roughly the same age as yours Lee67, just coming up to 1500 miles, and has used no oil. We haven't mollycoddled it, nor have we hammered it, but just driven normally really over a wide range of roads and speeds. We found it was fast enough even keeping within the book recommended limits, just didn't accelerate at full bore initially.

I've been checking the oil in the morning when it's been standing overnight since I read your earlier reports, and it's still on "full". I think you have just been unlucky, there was a report from someone else in the forum, can't remember who, who had an oil leak on a 1.2 and it turned out to be a leaking manifold I think, but not sure. I can't believe it's anything to do with your driving style, there must be a fault, I hope you get it sorted. As you say, brilliant engine, I think with all the 1.2's sold by now it would have been known by now if there was a major problem generally.

Best of luck with getting it sorted,. Tony

Hi

my 1.2tsi has now done 9k+ and i have only put in 250ml of oil at about 4k before we had a run up to Yorkshire to meet up with TP for a run across the moores. it has not used any since.

It may not be a leek that can be seen a bad turbo seal will let small amounts of oil through to the inlet manifold and burn it.

hope you get it sorted lee

Hi Lee,

my 1.2tsi has now done just over 11k miles of mixed driving and used no oil, level on the dipstick has barely moved. Looks like you have been unlucky with your Yeti. Hope they trace and fix the problem soon.

Del

i still havnt gone over 4000rpm( theres no need tbh)...but its still using oil, havnt had chance to get to dealers yet, but will defo be going, oh and if your is half way down the dipstick then it is using oil... ;)

I reckon that this could well be the reason for the high oil consumption. You are killing your petrol engine with kindness. The oil is probably seeping by the piston rings as things haven't properly bedded in. I guess that the redline is at least 6,500 rpm on these engines (I haven't checked) and they are designed for these revs to be used occasionally. The advice in the handbook is geared towards saving fuel and that is why many people think they are doing the right thing in limiting revs.

You don't need to thrash it but it does no harm to use a few revs against a moderate load every now and again. I would floor the accelerator in second and third on a steady uphill gradient say once a week just to get the engine working. You will do no harm as long as the engine is warmed up and you might just solve the problem.

Oh, that's not good, might need to go and buy some oil then! Thanks.

nah all the power on a 1.2 is made before 4000rpm, so thrashing to the redline does no help whatsoever...i could understand if it was my driving but nope....this is my 4th new car in 14 yrs and all were driven to handbook guidelines, so i still believe there must be a fault...........time will tell

I think the point that is being made by a number of posts is that it does indeed help; a great deal. Using the full revs once the engine has warmed up int eh early miles ensures that all the piston seals bed in properly - leading to a much less likely scenario of high oil consumption. Different motors react differently but it was found on previous Octavia threads to be the case as I mentioned previously. If it does turn out to be a fault then I hope they get it resolved asap for you.

well my yeti has been faultless in its 1900 miles.....great mpg etc and run in per manual'.....today whilst shopping the oil warning light came and stayed on...after shopping i checked the oil, and it was just visable on the dipstick...having had quite a few new cars/bikes so run in vehicles countless times, im rather concerned that my yeti has burned off alot of oil in such short mileage!!.....my last car never had any oil tops up bar yearly servicng and was thrashed within an inch of its life( ford focus)..so im quite worried , anyone else had higher than normal oil consumption...oh and its a 1.2 tsi never been past 4000 rpm and never passed 70 yet)!! :wonder:

SNAP! Mine too! Bought my yeti in April. Oil light came on last month (after around 3300 miles). It was almost totally empty. My Dad owns a garage and said it definitely wasn't right but filled it up and I'm going to see how it goes....

perhaps different engines consume oil at different rates?

I did over 10000 miles before my first service (at 5 months) and my oil level was about 2/3rds UP the dipstick level markers. I have not put any oil in at all since April and have now done over 12500 miles in a 170 diesel 4*4 YETI.
