mid section of exhaust on fun - something I can do myself?

Hey guys,

After succesfully replacing a full thermostat housing, flushing cooland and re-filing with no issues, I'm feeling slightly more confident about working on my Fun.

The middle section of the exhaust needs replacing. Gun Gum isn't cutting it anymore, and surly excess gum will fail an MOT? I should be able to get the part fairly cheap, but how are these to fit? I've had a quick look underneath, and they don't 'seem' to be welded in, but I could be wrong. I can either take it to a garage to get it done, try it myself, or see if a more savvy freind can do it. I'm properly skint, so if I can do it myself, I will!

will it be impossible to do it on my drive with only axle stands at my disposal?

The back section is fine by the way, it's fairly recent.

Bolted flange at the front (3 bolts) to the catalytic converter (easy enough), rear connection is a tube inside a tube, which will probably be the toughest thing, as if it's rusted in place can be hard work. If not, then the whole job is a piece of cake. No idea if it's the same on all felicias, I would think if any one would be different it would be the fun/pickup; the middle box is the same on the hatch and estate, though.

Not impossible on your drive with axle stands only, no.

Assuming the Fun is much the same as the 1.6 hatch/estate, it's a little different to the 1.3 setup as djaychela describes - the join between the front section (all-in-one downpipe/cat) and the centre section is a short sleeve that clamps the outside of both pipes. You can either leave the sleeve attached or pull it off with the centre section, depending on its condition.

The 1.6 exhaust sections are not the same as for the 1.3 - they're a larger diameter (as well as the different fixing mentioned above). For me, both the centre section and the connecting sleeve turned out to be cheapest from my local Skoda dealer compared to the motor factors and exhaust places I called round!

As for the job itself, I changed everything from the cat back, including all the mounts on a driveway with the back wheels on a pair of ramps in a couple of hours (wasn't rushing and I've never done an exhaust before). The front of the centre silencer makes a nice striking point for separating the front joint with a big hammer, and a hacksaw and mole grips came in handy for the heavily-corroded rear connection.

Also make sure you've got a third axle stand or something under the cat to support the front section when you take the centre section off, as it's not held on by anything except the manifold. Also remember to remove said axle stand before you take the car off the ramps, unless you want big cracks in said manifold. Oops... :doh:

Edit: just had a look at the parts diagram for a 1.6 pickup exhaust and it is indeed almost identical to the 1.6 hatch/estate - only the rear section is different. Centre section part number is 6U0253401B, mine was about £27 a couple of months ago IIRC.

I did the center pipe on my felly hatchback about a month ago. I did it on axel stands in my street. Was easy enough by lifting it just on one side. The above info is spot on. A wiggle of the back box worked for me, the joint with the cat proved more difficult, ended up using a angle grinder to get rid off the wrecked bolts.

i can confirm that this info is kosher :yes:

the front catalyst section/downpipe is exactly the same as the hatchback and estate models, but you need to get the one that suits whichever engine you have, the centre section is indentical to the hatchback and estate models... only the rear section is unique in each instance, ie the hatch estate and pickup all have specific rear exhaust sections...

i fitted a diesel exhaust system to mine, apart from doing some changes at to join it to the downpipe, the diesel system is the same shape as the petrol ones but it has a bigger bore size

Thanks for the help. I've had a llook under the car, it does seem quite rusty under there!

I've called my local skoda dealership, and their part was coming in at £53 with the clamp (the joining section) and £43 odd without it. I asked why it was more expensive, and gave him the part number quoted above, and he said there was no way he could do it at that price :(

Tom, are you saying the bores on all of the petrol models are the same, and it is only the diesel which is diferent[yet still the same shape] except the tail section? if so, would this part fit?

you can't really go of the pictures, however this item form the same seller has different specs, and a picture showing where it would bold onto the cat'

the tubing is 42mm OD on the petrol models.. just checked, you need to also get the centre section which matches you engine type becuase there are some slight differences in length of the downpipe/cat.. my local motor factors supplied mine for about £55 for both the centre and rear sections, so it might be worth checkin a few local sources.. the other thing worth looking into is that some exhaust shops offer free fitting too, it might be a little more expensive but at least they will fit it
