Wheel spin in damp weather

Featured Replies

Hi -

I'm thiking of changing my front tyres from CAMAC 195/65/R15 91H as I find I get wheel spin on damp roads with moderate/high acceleration (really bad on slight inclines). I drive a 06 Ocatvia 1.9TDI. I'm just wondering if the torque is too much for the width of the tyres and would changing tyres make much of difference?

It feels like there could be too much power being delivered (good thing) for the width of the tyres?

BTW the tyres are in good condition i.e. it is not a problem of lack of threads...but its uncomfortable driving, especially in damp conditions. Also in dry conditions the tyres have great grip so much so that they squeek when taking tight corners.

Are there tyres which are better for wet/damp conditions i.e. like formula 1 has dry tyres and wet tyres.

I think the problem could be with the tyres.Camac are firmly in the "cheap and nasty" end of the tyre quality spectrum.

The contact patch is the only interface between the road and the car and the temptation to spend less really is a false economy.

I swear by Michelin, but doubtless there will be many who will have their own favourites.

I have to agree, I have just put some cheap tyres on the front of my signum as I am awaiting my Octavia late this year. The new tyres were half the price what I would normaly put on and boy, what a mistake!

As others have said..Its the tyres.

Bite the bullet and get Premium brands...You will be safer too!!

why do people buy cheap crap tyres.??? i dont understand it personally, the only thing that connects your car to the road is the tyres.

if you tyres are squeeking when cornering, id say they are at their limits of grip. ive certainly never had squealing/squeeking tyres on anything but a track

if you have to do an emergency stop to avoid a child in your big heavy car, you'll end up breaking the tyres minimal grip and skidding into a kid.

you dont need to buy performance tyres, but there are plenty of good tyres out there that are still sensible money.

Hi Guys -

Firstly thanks for all of your replies which all amount to saying CAMAC are poor quality...I was suspect of these tyres myself.

Also I too AGREE tyres are very important. Unfortunatelly when I bough the car they had these fitted.

So from your replies if I moved to Bridgestone things should improve. I just wanted to check before I spend money on them.

I think I have to change the front 2 at least as coming into winter the driving is uncomfortable and like you suggest dangerous at least.

So this raise an interesting question should the garage have sold the car with these tyres? Not that I would hassel them but this is dissapointing of them to let me out on the road with poor quality tyres.

BTW are BRIDGESTONE a good option?

Regards,

octojoe.

Bridgestone are a premium brand, but I'd imagine almost anything will be an improvement. As to selling the car with the Camacs fitted, they're perfectly legal, even if they are ****.

Everyone will have their opinions with tyres, but any decent brand will help. I personally like Continental, but I've used Yokohama, Goodyear, Dunlop, Pirelli, and Continental and they're all pretty good. The Lupo has Nankangs on, and they are awful. I'm considering Kumho, Nokian, or Avon for winter tyres.

The Leon had some Millenium cheapies on when I bought it and Conti SC3s have transformed it.

I always bought Bridgestone for my previous Octavia however this was a 00 1.6 petrol and I wass just wondering if the Bridgestone 195/65/R15 will be able to cope wiith the torque from theh 1.9 TDI.

BUT like you and everyone else has said any Premium brand will make a difference.

I'll be purchasing them first thing Monday morning.....I'll look at contintental as well!
