De Wiper - How To

Featured Replies

After Doing endless serches on here i could not find how to De-Wiper the rear of the car for that Smooth look B)

So after taking the plunge found it only took 15 min or so..... dependent on how you are plugging the hole.

You can go to halfords and get a solid grommet the way a lot of people do but i went that little one step smoother and went for a Black Glass one.

Here goes for my Walk through guide...... it is sooooo easy!

To Start off you need to remove the wiper arm, flap open the plastic cover at the bottom of the arm and remove the nut that holds it on. then comes the tricky part of WD40 and a bit of BFI (no pics of this bit i'm afraid)

Once this is off you need to remove the plastic from the inside of the boot hatch:

Once its pulled straight off you will have it look like this:

IMG_0238.jpg

You will need to collect all the silly clips that have popped of and put them back in place on the plastic. heres a couple of picures which give you an idea of the clips in question and the locations on the other side:

The Clips:

Where they all are:

You will notice the motor is only heald on with 3 nuts, these are pretty special nuts with the large washer attached to the nut:

IMG_0239.jpg

once you have removed the Nuts, just unplug the motor from the loom and tuck it away (Don't worry it is on its own circuit so you will not get and fault codes or disrupt anything)

IMG_0241.jpg

The Washer hose is on tight but just give it a good tug and it comes off, then remove the hollow grommet from the window. You are left with a Wiper motor!

IMG_0240.jpg

At this point you will want to plug up the washer hose with something, as i had silicon for my glass grommet i just squeezes enough to block it off, this way i know i can just dig it out if need be, you can use what ever comes to mind though. then just tuck it away with the loom.

I also put the nuts back on the threads so i wouldent loose them.......

At this point you can just pop your Halfords grommet in and put it back together but mine involved a little more work with the silicone.......

A little dab of black silicone around the edge of the glass grommet to fit it to the clean window:

IMG_0242.jpg

Then stick it to the inside of the window:

IMG_0243.jpg

A little more silicone to give it a good bond/watertight:

IMG_0247.jpg

View from the outside of the car:

IMG_0244.jpg

After letting it touch dry we then tidied up the outside a little as its not a flush fit, a bit of silicone in the gap cleaned it up a lot!

IMG_0251.jpg

It was now just a case of putting it all back together....... as they say....... refitting is reversal of removal :giggle:

this time it really is, line up the clips ............ make sure the plastic has tucked round for the C pillars.......... and a bit of hitting it all clips into place B)

IMG_0237.jpg

After i hit the last clip in i hear a little metal thing rattle around the boot lid............ one of the clips didnt line up :dull: luckily the plastic holds and that clip has gone somewhere safe?!!?

Go And store the wiper Arm + Moto for refitting at a date of sale/if you want it back.

Not to everyones taste but i like the look just need to decide on the badges now

Thanks for reading...... and mind those clips....... ;)

grrrr as much as i hated the impraticality of it im not gonna lie it does look good

ive got a glass bung there so much better

Nice write up Phil...

It's not a mod for me but it does look good.

The Mrs would refuse to drive the car without a rear wiper :(

Whilst I can see people like the look without a rear wiper I'm still totally bemused by this modification. It makes the car more impractical and surely you'd have the trouble of putting it all back together when you sell it? Also I fail to see how plugging the washer hose solves that problem either. In the last winter my rear wiper froze and operating the lever popped a joint in the pipework. Luckily for the car it was the one just forward of the front bulkhead and hence only my engine got soaked - it could easily have been the one inside the car. You can't say "I'll never operate the lever" because it's easy to do it inadvertently and other people driving the car (even if it's only the garage when servicing or MOTing) may also try and wipe the rear window...

Yes i wil have the 'Trouble' of putting it back togher, but i considered this and is not a problem for me.......

That is tru! i have gone to do it a few times just out of habbit........ :giggle:

I use my rear wiper all the time when it rains as the rear of the car gets covered in traffic film and spray very quickly. This is not a mod for me but if it makes you happy........

Well, I have to say it's a tidy job and it looks fantastic. I wouldn't - because the like to see out the back, but a cheesecutter vent in the rear spoiler would sort that out. My dad's old SAAB 95 estate didn't have a rear wash-wipe, but it didn't need one as the slot in the rear spoiler kept the rear window clear at all times.

Everyone says 'I dont like it because i like to see out the back window' It really isn't as big a problem as you think! had it done about 2 weeks now, and the worst i had was about a 100 mile journey home the other day i had to stop to get diesel so while i was there i wiped it down with the free tissue at the garage :smirk:

But its just like having dirty glasses.... you can still judge distance of what ever is behind you.... ok its not 100% clear but you can still see.

Im starting to think i really shouldn't have bothered.... all's i'm hearing is 'But you cant see' (Wine and moan) :finger: i like it

I just hope that the people that insist on doing this "mod" inform their insurance company as it reduces the rear visibility and compromises safety margins.

I hope when someone leaves there car to get really dirty informs there insurance company as the layer of dirt build up reduces light output on there headlights.

I hope people inform there insurance company when there tyers are getting close to the legal limit... because the insurance company can blame that and not pay out.

any info on where to purchase the glass bung at all?

Rear washer water pipe that goes through firewall/bulk-head in engine bay could be disconnected at this point and trailed downwards.

This would over-come any accidental operation of rear wiper water getting into rear tail-gate panel.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

My god. I'v been on here for a good few year, and heard plenty of silly comments, but that is THE most PATHETIC on i'v read! Lol, oh ****, my rear window has a days worth of dirt, quick, ring admiral. **** me get a life. Are you saying anything with no back window is dangerous?!

Anyway, i'v had this mod for a year or so, as mr sunroof said, it's not that bad tbh, but then I am capable of driving a transit van/Luton box/bus without needing to put my head out the window to see :) I can understand why people are not too keen on it, the fabia is the worse car for crud on the rear window. But some of us can cope for that sake of a smoooooth arse.

Top how to guide, I'll leave you to inform in insurers now pmsl

My dad had an A6 - that doest come with a rear wiper, vans don't even come with back windows most of the time, motorhomes dont have back wipers...its not a legal requirements and certainly wouldnt require the insurance company notifying lol....

You gonna slap on a nice thick layer of water repellent?

When ever it rains flip ya rear window heater on as well.. always seems to help mine keep clear in heavy rain.. not sure how, the heat makes it more slippery? Or maybe it just evaporates more of it?

I don't even use my rear wiper tbh, don't like the arc of dirt left by it. This is good for me
