low fuel warning

Featured Replies

how much fuel is left when the warning light comes on? and how much fuel is left when you have 1 bar left before the light comes on.

The light should come on between 1 & 5 litres.

just a few miles then. I was really worried last night driving in rural country side. I had 2 bars left at the start of the journey and was hoping to fill up but to my horror the next petrol station was closed!!. Then my fuel gauge had 1 bar left and I had no idea how far the next petrol station was, I then turned off the radio and double checked I had the air con turned off). worse still I was following a slow car, i panicked, had to drop down a gear as it was only 35-40mph and lot's of going up hill. It wasn't safe to overtake and besides I didn't want to put my foot down. I then drove what seemed ages hoping the warning light won't come on. finally the slow car in front turned off, but I had to slow down and brake as the car in front stopped to make a turn into a road (even thouh the car didn't need to stop as there were no oncomin cars). arrgghh..i had to start from 1st gear and accelerate..made me panic, still in country side, no houses, no street lights or anything, middle of no where but still only one bar on the fuel gauge. then driove on checking fuelk gauge every 60 seconds. I finally made it to a built up area, hoping there would be a petrol station still open this time at night. finally a big sigh of reliefe, drove into a petrol station, then drove home.

According to the manual you have 7l when the fuel warning light comes on

My car has a warning "Bing" when low and the trip meter starts reading down the miles, in 5 mile increments.... They CAN go a bit quicker than you think though, if you are not driving economically. It starts at around an 80 mile range. It will also re-remind you, every time you switch off and back on again so you shouldn't get caught out easily!

yeah mine has a 'bing' too (i originally typed 'o' instead of 'i' but changed it thinking it wasn't appropriatee or sounded right)

..but no trip computer on mine, i wonder how accurate the warning light is and whether if it really comes on at 7litres left

When the gauge reads empty and the tank range readout reads 0 (if you have that) you've still got at least 10 gentle miles in the tank (from experience). However I wouldn't recommend trying it :giggle: Although I did prove my octavia had 35 miles in the tank after 0 (1 gallon) .

If you recall the Top Gear where they were driving to Blackpool to turn on the lights, they continued driving a good while after 0 range. I think there was a Polo, a Jaguar and i don't recall the third car.

There is clearly a small reserve in the tanks and if you still have some showing on the gauge there really is nothing to worry about.

I picked up a 60 plate Fabia 1.2 as a courtesy car this morning while my VRS is in. The light was on and no bars illuminated, so I put in £4 (knowing I'll only do around 15-20 miles in it) and it still had no bars so I reckon when the light comes on you still have a good few miles left.

On my Fabia it comes on at about 65 miles to go but that 65 miles can suddenly drop 20 miles in 5 miles driving distance.

i got down to the warning light, and then filled up, put 37 litres in

Plenty left in the tank when the warning light is lit. Just see how much you can get in the tank

when you fill it....
