Wheel / tyre noise

Featured Replies

Hi

My 2010 octavia vrs 170 has done 12000 miles and there is a resonating whining noise from the wheels.

The frequency of the noise slows down when the car slows down.

It sounds very like a wheel bearing is noisy but the dealer test drove it and said that it was the way the tyres were wearing - he even showed me a bulletin from Skoda that explains that there can be noise from the tyres and the only way to fix is change the tyres or swapping them round the car may help. It doesn't explain what the noise sounds like so it may not be the noise I am getting.

Has anyone else got this noise? Are there tyres that don't do it?

I have new Avon tryres on the front and the original Dunlops on the back - the bulletin does say that the noise is more likely to occur from non driven wheels and will be more noticeable with very low profiles.

Any fixes or suggestions?

Regards

Dave

How worn are the rears? There's a good chance it could well be the tyres.

You could test it by swapping the rears with the fronts. If the noise profile changes, then you know the tyres are the source.

almost certainly the back tyres, check the inside edges of them with your hand, they will feel uneven I bet

I had this problem, clearly coming from the front - suspected a driveshaft or bearing on the way out so took it to Skoda Canterbury for a checkover. They said both were fine, but that there might be an alignment problem which would require a laser check - and did not charge for the session - good customer relations. Went to local Hi-Q who discovered that the front alignment was way out (probably as a result of hitting one of the enormous potholes hereabout) so the tyres were knackered - and that the rears were perished after only 4 years. So new Dunlops all round (£375) but the car is now much nicer to drive - quieter and runs straight as a die.

search for "sawtooth"

Dunlop Sport Maxx are bad for this. I have the same issue on mine. There is a solution but you will need a good alignment place to do it for you. I can't remember whether it is toe in / toe out or camber / castor.

It is the Sport Maxx on the back of mine and there is plenty of tread on them - the edges dont seem to be feathered / worn too much. The noise can be really annoying and sounds a bit like a wheelbearing whining at times especially when on a smooth road at low speeds (20mph), on a roundabout etc.

There is seemingly a tremendous alignment place in Edinburgh (CLCM) but they are expensive. Do you know the solution or know where I can find it?

I was considering swapping the back wheels over left to right and right to left as the bulletin from Skoda says that swapping the wheels round should wear the tyres back to even wear.

I also thought of taking it to another dealer for a second opinion but it means more wasted time and my normal dealer have been ok so far.

Thanks for all the replies so far guys. Much appreciated.

Cheers

Dave
