Broken TV and J Lewis warranty

Featured Replies

I've got a 32" Samsung R74 Srs LCD TV, coming up to 4 years yrs old. When I got home tonight I couldn't switch it on, neither with the remote or tv button. The only sign of life was the normally static red standby LED flashing slowly.

First of all, anyone know what the likely cause is? I've had no luck with google

Second, is there anything I can try or shall I just dig out the paperwork and take it back to John Lewis?

This couldn't have happened at a worse time as my wife gets back from her holiday tomorrow and if she's got no tv, she'll create hell. If anyone has a redundant TV they don't want, any size or style, close to Manchester and are willing to give it away/let me borrow it for a few weeks, I'm all ears.

Try leaving it unpluged for a few minutes

I've done a "few minutes" with no joy and I've already unplugged it to leave it off all night to try again in the morning.

Sounds like the PSU has died/fried.

Time to call JL for a repair or new one.

I am in 2 minds as to whether I want it to come back to life. Now would be a good time to upgrade to something bigger with more features but it couldn't have come at a worse time.

I work for the John Lewis partnership and I'll tell you now that they won't swap it but might repair it for the charge of the repair. Did you take out an extended warranty from a 3rd party as again jlp don't do warrantees of their own.

The flashing standby light is usually a faulty CPU board or the CPU board is overheating (which happens when the software locks up). Letting it cool down may fix the problem assuming it hasn't completely fried.

Some of the Samsung TVs of that age can be affected by WiFi. You haven't just put a wireless router nearby, have you?

What about the free 5yr guarantee on all TVs they have extensively advertised for a number of years?

Warrnaty/Guarantee its all the same to me but you know what I mean

:whistles:

My wifi box (Orange Livebox) has sat next to it for the last 6 months :o

Richer Sounds 5 yr warrenty ftw..

Whats the warrenty on JL? I thought it was also 5 yrs..?

Also, did you try other techie forums or google search for common problems with your model of tv?

Unless it's changed very recently i thought the JL standard warranty on TV's was 5 years..... In any case even if it is a recent change this TV is 4 years old so should have the JL 5yr warranty on it.

*****EDIT***** Just been on JL website and it says standard warranty on all TV's is 5 years..... It's to be hoped you don't work in the electrical dept of JL!!!! ;)

I think the only possible downside to the JL warranty is i don't think you get a temp TV whilst yours is repaired..... When we got our Panny plasma a couple of years ago i was all set to go with JL but they couldn't say when they would be getting them in stock so i managed to strike a pricematch deal with the Panasonic shop in Sheffield. The warranty i got through Panasonic also included a replacement TV whilst any repairs were done on the plasma. I asked if it would just be a little portable but they said as ours was a largish plasma we'd get a largish temp TV.

Cheers

Dave.

Have you looked down the back of the sofa?

Sounds like you need to u/g the wife TBH.

How big is your PC monitor? Don't underestimate what you can stream these days - off BBC and ITV, at least...

I make sure the tv and pc works, she cooks my dinner and irons my shirts.

19" but c.b.a moving it.

But at least I have found the receipt, purchased on the 18 Dec 2006. This was by no means an expensive TV at the time but if I spend £650 on a TV I'd like it to last more than 4 years. Don't want to start looking at 40"+ TVs yet in case they say they can repair it.

TV repairman has been today and had to take it away to fix as it wasn't the easy fix he thought it would be.

We have been given a loan tv :)

(We'd borrowed one anyway for the past week but nice to know)

Thank God that's all sorted. I dread to think what might have happened if your wife had come home to no TV

Of course, you could have just feigned ignorance and pretended she'd broke it :giggle:

bad news :'(

It's been fixed and it's due back tomorrow. Excellent service from John Lewis so far. The replacement Viera is not pretty but I can't deny the picture is better.

Have they said what the fault was?

Have they said what the fault was?

Not 100% sure as my wife has spoken to them but I think it was the psu.
