To do or not to do

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I have entered the slippery road of modding. I have fitted a pd160, and springs and powerflex bushes are going on next week.

I dont have heaps of money, but have a remap booked for late in the year.

My question/s are:

Is a decat needed? Or worth the cost?

Is an after market filter really worth it?

Is an uprated clutch needed? (my target figures below)

My target is 180/190bhp and 300lb/t

Any other suggestions more than welcome! :)

Decat is not needed on a stage 1 map

Don't waste your money on an after market filter, just change the OEM one every 10K

180 bhp with 300lbs should be fine if your clutch system is in good order. I would be surprised if you reaching a true 190 bhp on a stage one map though

Yeah, the far side of 180bhp is very unlikely from just a remap. My standard clutch has been fine with well over 300lb-ft for quite a while now, but I do do a lot of motorway driving...

just a remap and you should be about your target,

P-Torque remap, PD160, Pipercross filter & V power diesel fuel got me:

180 bhp & 295lb/ft on P-Torque's RR

185 bhp & 300lb/ft on AmD's RR (on a day where people were complaining of low readings)

Don't got mental with the torque and the clutch should be ok. I wouldn't de-cat without changing the rest of the exhaust tho.

I see you're based in Worcs, P-Torque are a stone's throw from you (based near Dudley), and I would highly recommend them.

you wont get over 180bhp on stock turbo!

;)

you'll probally get around 170-175bhp...

and even at this my first vrs only had one good run in it and then it was heat soaked back down to 50bhp! due to the puny smic

So you reckon remapping will cause heat soak? Im pretty sure alot of people have remapped smic's and this hasnt happened...

So advice is just a remap from where I am?

If remap only takes to 170-180bhp would a FMIC, Decat plus a remap take me 180-200bhp..?

Thinking of doing 'minor' stuff first and if big things go bang (clutch/turbo) I can replace that when time comes.

Nope you need a pd150 turbo to reach 200

The pd130 turbo will simply not put out enough boost

Heat soak is easily done at remapped figures if prolonged use of WOT

The mods you have planned will make full use of the remap and will be benificial especially fmic to keep temps down, may add 5bhp if your lucky but will keep you from getting 'heat soaked'

My car on my old map with a few other mods made 178bhp 288lb ft torque on the rollers. At that point i had BMC CDA, EGR Deleted, De Cat Straight through exhaust and my map. But i was told i had reached the maximum for the SMIC and it was badly needing a FMIC

I've now had another remap which is supposed to give me 190bhp 310lb ft but my mates mapped Fabia vRS kept up with me and his is supposed to be 170bhp and not sure on torque. But my clutch isn't the best and it keeps blowing a boost pipe off so can't really appreciate the car much. But i have a FMIC planned if i get a new job

I had on my old one

Bmc cda

Magnex cat back

Egr delete

Stanless boost hoses

Helix clutch and smf

Vibrateknics dogbone mount

Star remap

And a standard blt engined 07 plate limited ed vrs shadowed me all the way, lol

Exactly what is a bmc cda?

And is the egr delete mod worth doing?

:( Ah well, no its just that the boost pipes are a bit loose so if I were going to change piping I "may as well" get a FMIC too.. :D

Thats a BMC CDA  great bit of kit :D

Im on my iphone but if you click on my profile and have a look at my topics there will be pics of my new car in a thread

It has a bmc on a fabia and egr delete

Egr is good so is ccv mod as it means you run clean cold boost!!!

Not oily sooty rubbish

My standard clutch was slipping 1 week after a revo stage 1 so had the Saachs clutch fitted! Personally I wouldn't worry about heat soak for spirited road use but you'll notice it if you ever venture near a track.

John

I ran a P-Torque map at 170 bhp and 295lbs according to their rolling road for 18 months until my turbo expired.

Nothing to do with the map but a hole in the rear boost pipe causing over boost. I have since had an (Ali unit 18 special) hybrid custom built by turbo technics and a custom Richard Washbrook map and the extra power and performance is huge. There is no way in my mind a standard turbo would cope with the new questions being asked of a stage 2 map making approx 195-205 bhp.

I have not noticed any heat soak yet but i have not been near a track

Matt

My mates is the ASZ engine same as mines and hasn't had an oil change since 36k and is now over 72k! It's a shame but he's finally pulling his finger out and is gonna start looking after it!

Mines is due a service aswell but being out a job it's not possible :( I hate not servicing my car on time! Hoopefully my job interview goes well tomorrow and i can get it serviced and start on more power :)

Is the egr quite easy to do?

Yeh, get the EGR Delete pipe and put it on and jobs a good un :)

Although it's this pipe in the picture that keeps blowing off now since the new map :(

Is the egr quite easy to do?

Very

Just get a 90 bend silicone pipe on ebay..! (and another clip). :p its quite inexpensive compared to the hassle it may cause..!

Edit: no ccv/elephant hose mod?

Don't have the cash atm :( i'm literally skint. If i don't get this job tomorrow my car needs to be sold :(
