Alloy Refurb...

Featured Replies

Does anyone have any experience of companies/people who can get rid of alloy scuffs [one previous "careful" lady owner], or would it be worth getting them painted black or white...

I think I should keep them silver, as I think the alloys would look too small in the arches, if that makes any sense...

Any opinions?

Go to a wheel refurbishment company that refurbishes by powder coating (not just painting) and keep them silver  - there's a section on here (Tuners & Workshops) where people leave recommendations.

Powder coating will cost arou d £35-40 a wheel. But it is a more durable finish than paint. The place that does the powdercoating should flatten out any scuffs and scrapes.

I was quoted £70 - not sure whether that was incl. or excl. vat

If your from Kent Essex Surrey way diamond style alloy wheel refurbishment are exceptional, they have a contract with Bently so I am sure you can guess the quality of the work. Although powder coating is more durable it can no way beat a paint finish. Powder coating will always come out dull and is really a cheap alternative.

I've had mine powder coated (silver - got them done due to corrosion on one of the front wheels) and they certainly aren't dull.

I had my octy's done by a guy in Narberth for £40 a wheel, done a goodly job. Ive got a spare set of wheels here if you do decide to get them done!

I would not get my wheels powder coated again. I had a set very poorly done at BJV Engineering and they told me to take them away (no charge) and it was only afterwards I discovered why. The powder coating is very difficult to get off afterwards and re-doing them is difficult.

I would therefore recommend getting them painted by somone like Lepsons (they have places in Kent and Wiltshire and collection points across the UK). They have always done a good job for me. PX Wheels in Blackpool will send you boxes to pack your wheels into and then send them back, but they look expensive at about £240/set. Do remember though, that YOU GET WHAT YPU PAY FOR.

And if you're really stuck, most bodyshops and Chipsaway vans can paint a wheel.

I'm really pleased with my wheels after powder coating - it's down to how good the company that does them is.

Fabia alloys have a reputation for corrosion - paint would have been useless in my case - it was a new alloy or powder coating.

I don't understand why you couldn't have removed the surface corrosion, filled any resulting low areas and then painted the wheel. Whether painting or powder coating you need to shot-blast ALL the corrosion off the wheel. If you don't, then it will come back.

If the wheels were too bad for filler, they were too bad to be used. A lot of powder-coating websites make statements such as "We don't use filler". That just means you get a poor finish on a pitted wheel. A reputable wheel refinisher (paint or powder coat) will have no compunction whatsoever about telling you that your wheels are too far gone to be refurbished.

Oh, and woe betide you if you use a strong acid wheel cleaner on a powder-coated wheel. It lifts off in clumps, and handily, that's the best way to remove powder coat too!

The wheels are painted from the factory and that's the best way for them.

I was going to go to Chips Away (used them to repair a kerbed alloy on a previous car - no kerbed by me of course :giggle: ) but was told not to go there by someone in the trade as they wouldn't strip the wheel right back and the corrosion would simply reappear.

Anyway, took it to a highly recommended place that refurbished them by powder coating and I'm more than happy with the result - tyre pressures have remained constant every time I've checked them (was very slowly losing pressure previously on the front nearside tyre due to corrosion at the back of the wheel - the front was absolutely fine).

I am certainly not knocking powdercoating, but when painted you will always get an amazing smooth mirror finish

Totally agree, i used Lepsons. Mine were in a right state with corrosion and some kerbing and they now look like new.

Not necessarily you wont, like anything it all comes down to the guys skill, if they are given to a 16 year old fresh from school chimp then the chances are they wont look much cop either.

If there is ANY corrosion at all then they need to be stripped back down to bear alloy otherwise it will come straight back through, with 95% of any paintwork / powder coating it's all down to the preparation.

Edit: I have just had a set of alloys powder coated

As I stated I am probably biased because my mate owns a wheel refurb company that only paint. Powdercoating can also male your wheels sittting on the hubs badly if there is just 2mm extra powder to any given part of the alloy where it joins. But 20£ a wheel is a bargin and I would pay that all day long
