Xenon Headlights

Featured Replies

I have standard Xenon headlights.

Want to change the side lights and apparentlt headlight unit has to be removed to work on.

When refitted it needs resetting by VAG-com to set beam auto-levelling.

Do I really need to do this? Or can I just remove units replace bulbs and refit units?

otherwise blown bulbs are gonna costa bomb.

I removed my nearside headlight (also Xenon) the other day to replace the levelling motor. I did not remove the external connectors - I just undid the torz screws holding the back of the enclosure on and replaced the motor. When I refitted it all, the levelling worked just fine.

However, I am not sure what the VAG_COM adjustment would do? The nearside lamp is now a little lower than the offside, but not by much, and at least the motor goes up and down ok now.

I would imagine you could follow the same method to change bulbs.

I changed my main beams to Phillips blue vision,as they match the Xenon light and don't look so yellow. When I bought them I got 2 Phillips blue vision side lights, these too are a nice white light and get rid of the yellowness in the reflectors if you know what I mean.Anyway I just carefully removed the headlight unit (Its a good idea to put masking tape on top edge of bumper and round lamp washer to prevent chips). Here is a link to Robs guide on how to remove headlight.....

Good site, don't know how I missed that one.;)

Hi

I recently changed my side light bulbs just before the MOT and took both units completely out and unplugged all connectors and when plugged back in everything worked fine. It`s actully a rather easy job and wastes an hour or so on a day off from work.

On a related note, how the heck do you get those connectors off?

There is a raised tab at the end nearest the cables, push that down and you should hear a click as it releases and then you can pull the connector backwards and off.

Some sausage fingered yob snapped one of mine! It still seals and locks, but there's no thumb tab to pull back on so I have to carry a tiny flat blade screwdriver to manually lift the tab up! I suspect you'd have to buy a whole new loom from Skoda too, rather than a new connector body.

You should be able to buy the plastic housing on its own. It will have a part number on it somewhere. Then you will just need to persuade all of the contacts out of the old one.
