Knocking noise from the front.... Help!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Since starting my new job at the beginning of the year I have started commuting a little further and recently I have noticed a knocking noise that is getting progressively more frequent. It is a creaking noise that sounds like it is either coming from the front or below the car. It mainly happens when accelerating and braking and also going over speed bumps. I have read that the engine mount is a common issue as is the gearbox mount. My question is could it be this, and if so can I do it myself? Or does it require special tools? What signs should I be looking out for that point to the mounts having gone? I am fairly handy with tools but has anyone on here tried it and/or have a guide to doing it? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Thanks in advance,

Dean

could also be either your wishbone rear bushes or ARB drop links. i had the problem on both my fabias and it turned out to be wishbone bushes on one and droplinks on the vRS

Ok, is there any specific ways to check either of these to either rule them out or remedy the issue?

Cheers,

Hi to test your link arms turn the wheel to full lock and grab it at the bottom to pull and push on it also do this at the top. you will feel play and also feel a knock within it. Sometimes jacking eachside up and trying it is also worth trying. To test your ball joint agen jack the vechicle up make sure use axle stands to! Hold the wheel at top and bottom (12oclock and 6oclock) to agen push on the botttom there should be no movement. To test tack rod /tie rod hold the wheel at 3oclock and 9oclock and agen rock there shuld be no play. if there is play in both directions it could be a wheel bearing tho so you will have to look at the joints while some one rocks it to see if you can see any movement it the joints itself.

To check wishbone joints you will need get under the vehicle and get like a lever and prise and the side of the wishbone and will see play in the bush itself.

my car has just developed a knock on the n/s/f and i assume the wishbone bush at the back nearest the rear does have some movement in it as all vw range does.

im going upgrade my rear bushes to eaither the fr ibiza ones or the powerflex ones.

regarding doing ityou self you could do the link arm itself but wishbone is rather a big job as the rear bush is part of the subframe. The ball joint you could possible do but sometimes tight to get off. Tackrod end you could do but would require tracking after. The wheelbearing would require a press so a garage would have to do that.

I may of missed a few thing etc but its harder to write and explain than i thought and its far easier just to show you etc!!! hope it helps well at least some off it because its taken me ages write!

Thanks for the info I will try to use some of this when im having a look tomorrow, but I am convinced that the noise is coming from the front, the back is as quiet as a whisper!

I've seen a thread for some upgraded drop links Meyle I think, if it is them has anyone got a link where they can be bought from?

Part you want is 1160600000/HD: Meyle Stabiliser Link - Skoda FABIA (6Y2) 1.9 SDI (FR/MYX)

Goto Express Car Parts, and put your car details in. Then select Steering & Susp. Components and do a text search on 1160600000/HD. £11.66 inc VAT.

Can't do a direct link, sorry, because of the way their website works.

Exactly the same symptoms as when my console bushes went, I'd get them checked... Common fault.

Marc
